Apples R&D consists of looking at what the competitors are doing, find the best ideas then claim to have invented them.

It's a shame because right now they're knocking 'em dead with the excellent ipad siri ads....(MS's finally got a good answer to the "I'm a mac" ads)

...and then there's this.

Microsoft is brilliant, they purposely created a very bad video mocking Apple and then yanked it off the web creating a buzz amongst journalist which pushes every curious person to actually watch it. Excellent use of reverse psychology Microsoft!

avatar

I don't get it. :(

avatar

MaximumMike

I totally agree with the article. However, I am convinced I am the only person here who actually has a terrible enough of a sense of humor to find that commercial funny.

avatar

MiGreen

that makes two of us and these are funnier that maximum pc's pop up adds!

avatar

limitbreaker

I hate doing it but I installed adblock+, maxpc really exaggerated the amount of adds they allowed to their site to the point that it was invasive.

Poor Microsoft, the just can't catch a break. I almost feel sorry for them, but then I remember Windows 8, and remember they totally deserve it.

Microsoft needs to clean house.

Their sales people need to stop designing product.

Their engineers and designers need to improve products, not radically change them to suit the whims of sales people, ignoring the customer's voice.

They need to stop insulting customers for not liking their radical changes.

In general, they need a big glass of Chill the Fuck Out and Stop Acting Like Pricks.

Make a better product, and the rest will follow.

So, basically MS has to convert to Apple. 0_o

"Hahaha, I heard something funny!"

"What?"

"Microsoft Surface RT! Hahahaha!"

"Huhuhuhu! I heard something just as funny!"

"What?"

"Windows 8..."

"Bwahahaha!"

Seriously. Pot meet kettle. Hug each other and take a bow. For all the failures Microsoft has had over the years, they thought it would be a good idea to go after Apple for introducing the the 5 and it's plastic-blandtastic colors?

The Microsoft one was almost as lame as modern SNL.

I think you're telling me that the CoCo one was supposed to be better but, well, I've never found his sense humor to be in line with mine.

Hipster ads like this conflict with M$'s "straight-laced corporate" image. They're messing with their proven success...

avatar

Ghok

"hipster ad"? really? it seems more like any other bit of amateur unfunny office humour.

avatar

vrmlbasic

Yes. These are hipsters, or at the very least they're (successfully) attempting to portray themselves as such; the woman is even wearing the iconic (and "ironic") "hipster glasses".

"amateur unfunny office humor" falls under "hipster humor". All hipster humor is predicated upon having the same (failed) definition of "irony" that the hipsters have, which for someone like me means that it will always fail to be funny (no matter how "meta" or whatever it may be). I will never understand this "it's funny because it is purposefully bad, thus making it 'ironically' bad" philosophy of humor.

Apparently this ad was so bad that it went from being funny due to "irony" (as I'm told that SNL & The Office are) to just plain bad in the eyes of the hipsters.

avatar

Ghok

Shit, these hipsters sound terrible! Thank you for opening my eyes.

The pace is off, too long, cramming in all their jokes into one clip instead of making a series of 30 second gags. No background noise or music to create familiarity. Flat delivery of lines - every line sounds the same. Sometimes funny when woman fill in the gaps with some relief. Good effort, but it would not sell more WinPhones. All it is saying is "our competitor has products."

Apple spends a decade with their pansy 'I'm a mac, I'm a PC' ads bashing Microsoft. Of course everybody --loved-- these ads. M/S comes out with an Apple bashing ad and all of the sudden things aren't so funny.

Typical hypocritical pansies. Bash Microsoft all you want, I use everything (Windows, OSx, iOS, Android) and Windows does more as an OS than anything Apple has ever produced. Make an OS that works on an endless array of hardware configurations and work well?! Windows 7! Make an O/S that has to run on a very specifically tweaked hardware configuration?! OSx Both have their pluses and minuses, but if you discount Windows 7 as THE performance OS, you are just talking out of your ass!

Yes, Apple wins at phones. Yipee! iPhone is THE PC of the phone world. Every grandma to 13 year old has one. Most don't know how to use it for shit, but they have them, all wrapped in giant lifeproof cases so as not to scuff their precious gem.

The only thing that separates these Apple fanatics from an extreme cult is a koolaid suicide party!

There, I feel better now.

Have a nice day!

avatar

wolfing

Considering what Apple called "the PC" was actually the Windows OS, today's "PC" of the phone world would be Android.

avatar

DeltaFIVEengineer

And your hyperbolic rant separates you how?

avatar

Engelsstaub

Apparently he uses "OSx" so he's not actually some cheerleading fanboy getting worked up over someone else's product choices. :S

avatar

henoch

"Yes, Apple wins at phones. Yipee! iPhone is THE PC of the phone world. Every grandma to 13 year old has one."

No, it's not. Android is. It outsells iphones and it's often cheaper.

I agree on apple adds making fun of pc. They were in bad taste and quite

offensive. MS should not lower itself to apple's standards but they are

not too brilliant in marketing.

avatar

acidic

i don't know what is funnier. these commercials or the 4% drop in their stock price today. either way it is win-win

avatar

jbitzer

yeah, a %4 stock drop on one day is a death knell for a company....

How much did apple drop this month again?

avatar

Carlidan

Don't get the fuss about.

avatar

Apparently Microsoft should have hired Conan to do their ads.

avatar

RUSENSITIVESWEETNESS

Yeah. The Conan spoof was golden. I'm not sure what they were trying to do with the other one.

avatar

vrmlbasic

CoCo's ad was better but it was far from funny; the only thing golden about it was the iPhone itself.
