Ignored the Deadline? How are they telling people? Only reason I know is this article.

...for whatever reason will no longer receive security updates? Why, Why on earth are they no longer offering the latest update patches.

This is the weirdest article I've ever read on Max PC.

Just saw this article and it reminded me to update one last PC in the office. Alas, Windows Store doesn't work for some reason and it won't let me find the update. Hopefully the Windows Store will work later and/or I'll get the update message again. Weird.

What are you updating that computer to? Be aware that Win8.1 Update 1 isn't on the Windows Store. You get that update through Windows Update on your control panel.

So the large number of people who are facing issues installing the 8.1 Update should just be ignored then? This is a well known issue, people have been complaining about it for sometime now on MS forums and the fixes that MS has provided so far have not been able to resolve these issues for most people.

But Maximum PC just glossing over this fact is a big deal and just wrong. I get why MS won't acknowledge the fact. But why are you guys overlooking this? Aren't you supposed to present the whole picture? People who haven't been able to install an update despite their best efforts (working with MS support even) should be called anything but slowpokes. I mean, if there are hundreds of people on the MS forums shouting about it, how many more do you think are there who just don't care enough to bother posting it on the Forum, are oblivious to the May 10 (now June 10 deadline) or don't even know there's an issue with their systems to begin with.

And what about this gem:
"If you have Automatic Updates enabled, you don't have to worry about the deadline, so long as you have an active Internet connection."
Despite the occasional update breaking some part of the OS, your take on the Windows Update settings is to enable Automatic updates? Really? I think Maximum PC readers probably already know better than that, but still?

You vill do as you are told! Ya!

Did the clowns at Microsoft ever address that issue that prevented some Windows 8 64Bit users from upgrading to 8.1 due to come newly added code that suddenly caused Windows 8.1 to become incompatible with some machines?

avatar

hornfire3

nope. all they cared is trying to attract customers through shoving down that Kindergarten Block UI called Metro. and they tried to make it even more money grabbing by removing media center (and making us purchase it for a separate copy). It's been like this since release.

God, M$'s been really desperate. All they want is your fking money.

This is worded improperly from Microsoft's end.

I envision this more like you can receive updates from older versions of Windows, but those updates will just be 8.1 then 8.1 Update. Much like in say XP or Vista, if you installed a pre SP3 or SP2 respectively version, eventually Windows update will only give you the SP to install.

I guess my biggest confusion about all this is why anyone who has Win8 or Win8.1 would procrastinate in getting any of the updates...whether a major one like Win8.1 Update 1 or any of the "normal" updates that happen every Patch Tuesday?

Heck, you can even make it happen automatically...without any effort on your part except to tweak a couple of settings. Not that hard to do.

My sentiments, exactly. It' almost like; some that comment on here are malcontents. No reason to not do W8.1--NONE. Those that have problems can get FREE help from Microsoft on Updates, and Security related issues. Just fix you putters. please, and stop your bellyaching.

So what if you have a system disc crash (or just want to re-install Win8/Win8.1 from the disc)? Sounds like you're screwed. I don't think I've ever seen anything like this before from MS for a current OS. Have the inmates taken over the asylum in Redmond?

There was actually an issue with this update. The first rollout of the update was botched, and a lot of people were reporting that they could not get it installed.

Not a problem for me. I don't have Win8 and never will.

So if someone comes in my shop and needs their win 8 PC re-installed, after June 10th I wont be able to put in 8.1??

Is that right?

avatar

big_montana

Win 8.1 is in the App store, the 8.1 update is part of Windows update. One is optional (win 8.1) the other installs automatically when updates run (8.1 update, but only if you updated to Win 8.1)

The problem here is that instead of calling it a service pack like they always do, they had the not so good idea of calling it Windows 8.1 Update, not to be confused with an update for Windows 8, which it also happens to be. So there's a ton of confusion whenever the topic is discussed, because it's so hard to understand what a person is referring to. Might as well try to figure out Who is on first.

avatar

evga760

no, it means when you re-install it, youll probly have to download the 8.1 update right away. Im guessing, unless its a one day deal "update now or never"

avatar

iheartpcs

Ok, I think I figured it out...I think.

It's not THE 8.1 update, it's an update FOR 8.1??

Still doesn't make sense that they would stop people from getting that update. If some users don't do the update, wouldn't that then essentially break their win 8 because they then wont be able to do ANY updates? So that $800 laptop you just bought would be rendered almost useless if you happen to not get that update in time. Typical users will not get this info and therefore not know about the deadline.

Man, MS sucks so bad these days...

avatar

Paul_Lilly

Correct, it's a major update for Windows 8.1. It's basically a renamed Service Pack, which if you recall also had to be installed on previous versions of Windows to continue receiving updates.

To clarify, Microsoft isn't pulling the Update after the deadline. You just need to have it installed in order to continue receiving uninterrupted security patches, like the ones doled out every Patch Tuesday. You could, in theory, apply the Update six months from now if you wanted to rock an unpatched OS for that long, and then continue to be supported.

Make sense?

avatar

edchombeau

Right. Tactfully said. I would have said "Update your puter's OS, you malcontents.

avatar

iheartpcs

Ok, so if you don't install this update before deadline, you will not receive any further updates until you DO install this update?

avatar

Baer

Makes sense and I think most of us knew that but I guess some did not.
Also I have notices that many do not realize that they can not get the upgrade to 8.1 from 8.0 unless all 8.0 updates have been installed first.
This is really not new either but the Win 8 haters will hate, always been that way, always will be.
