Time to write a new story! Just more smoke and mirrors accounting from M$. The real truth about the Surface!

I think Surface "RT" are actually excellent devices once people get past the confusion of seeing a "Win8" device that cannot install legacy applications. They didn't do a good enough job of explaining it to customers when it launched and the Windows Store initially had a really crappy selection. Now that the RT devices are being marketed correctly, have Win8.1, and the store actually has an excellent selection, it makes sense that the devices are selling. Really, compared to a "media consumption" device like the iPad or Galaxy Tablets, you can do so much actual content creation with the Surface (and especially Surface Pro) line up. Plus the new second gen Pro devices with Haswell are a huge step forward in battery life and really make them suitable "tablets" (even though they are essentially mid-powered ultrabooks in tablet form)

"marketed correctly"? I must have missed this (although I haven't heard of mass returns, it must have happened).

And how is a win tablet any less a "media consumption" device than anything else? Sure, having Office at least gets you a chance to modify things, but you are going to have to plug in a keyboard and mouse to do anything remotely serious, thus negating all the "tabletness" it has. I would claim a chromebook (the other candidate for most returned item after Christmas) would be superior for "actual content creation" due to handy attached keyboard.

"The company sold 3.9 million Xbox One consoles during the quarter, or 900 million more than it previously announced"

Paul, I assume you meant 900 thousand more??

Just askin'.

Paul, you fell into the same trap I did when I saw the MS release. MS simply says that it sold 3.9 million XBox Ones to the RETAIL CHANNEL this past quarter, not to consumers. Any Ones sitting on the shelves somewhere are part of this count and the 3 million sold to consumers is still the correct number.

Actually the profit makes sense as more companies roll out Windows 7. To quote "Our Commercial segment continues to outpace the overall market, and our Devices and Consumer segment had a great holiday quarter," Commercial is doing great re: enterprise (Win 7), and Solid Xbone sales saved the holiday, everything else tanked.

Actually Windows licensing dropped off more than 5%, and I'm pretty sure that is including the uptick in Pro and Enterprise seats. Most of what Microsoft considers "Commercial Segment" are server products, commercial Cloud services, Office (the big cash cow) and management services like MS System Center ("Big Data" management).
Surface posted almost $900 million in sales for the quarter which was up massively. The devices growth is even in spite of the huge gap in Windows Phone, so Surface and Xbox hardly "tanked" as you put it.

I hope they keep him on just for "Monkey Boy" appearances at trade shows...

I am proud for Microsoft. It's a very good product overall, the only thing that still keeps me from buying one is the graphics card. Razer had a great idea of adding a decent graphics chip on the Razer Edge but that tablet has a terrible battery life and isn't wacom penabled like the Surface, which is something I would definitely use for drawing.

I am researching ways to go with my office setup. Staying with a desktop although a super small one like the m93p. Pros attaches to back of monitor no space used, mil specs and great warranty 1000 bucks give or take with ssd drive and latest haswell. Or go with something like the Surface pro 2 and docking station which will allow great mobility also. Both will run two monitors for work.. Great reviews from actual users regarding surface 2 pro..

Nice job Microsoft! Once again proving that perseverance, despite intense animosity, eventually wins you the prize. Now imagine how much Microsoft would be making IF W8 stuck to the old formula?

@Innomasta: "Now imagine how much Microsoft would be making IF W8 stuck to the old formula?"

Eh...By now, just about every troll on this site has upgraded to Windows 8 because of the performance improvements in BF4.

So let me know if you guys need any Modern app recommendations. I know of one that's great at moving goalposts.

Just PM me through your alt account. I won't tell anyone, promise.
