As a proud member of the PC Master Race, I laugh at the new peasant media players and their 'next-gen' moniker. May GabeN's light shine on them for they know not their mistakes. . .

Another horribly written and extremely biased article by Pulkit. The title gives the author's loyalties away before reading the first sentence. GIVE IT A REST WITH YOUR PERSONAL VENDETTAS! Albert Penello made a simple statement and when specifically addressed about his statement, he reinforced it. And there was no contraversy whatsoever. Maybe in your head, but nowhere else did anyone throw any kind of revolt against Microsoft. All of these facts about the hardware are already known. There are distinct similiarities and differences between the two consoles that in the end just won't make that much of the difference. The secret (which is no secret at all really) is that game developers will make or break which titles are absolute successes and which are total failures. It's a tid-for-tad tech fight between Microsoft and Sony. We all knew it was going to happen and there is simply no drama anywhere - unless we read this crap fictictious article that tries to convince us otherwise. The bottom line is that both companies are going to release their next-generation game consoles and they are going to be great. Games will look much better than anything that is currently available on the older generation XBOX360 or PS3 - period. So stop sensationalizing standard tech news and just report the facts. Keep your personal biased opinions and feelings at home and BE A PROFESSIONAL TECH WRITER for Maximum PC.

So you took some writing classes, but your claim is not appreciated, not true, and rhetorical or should I say a bunch of crap. What do you think your somebody becacuse you got a gun. BET MINE IS BIGGER THAN YOURS.!!!

YES, BROTHER! Let's unite against the ignorant and provocative scum! Let's fight against squared soap bars, low priced products, and round wheels! We will initiate our first strike by yelling at a rubber ducky in the middle of the park. That'll teach them!

RANDOM IDIOTS FROM THE STREET, UNITE!

U mad?

avatar

PCLinuxguy

Wow, way to rant. Instead of writing a book to defend someone try this instead: If you feel you can do a better job as a PROFESSIONAL tech journalist then by all means please do so on a REPUTABLE tech news site instead of posting comments bashing someone just because you disagree with them as though you're some know-it-all d-bag.

esram for xbox one is external and less heat. faster gddr5 is more heat. esram is external programing code cache.

avatar

limitbreaker

please clarify... ESRAM is apart of the APU die, what do you mean external.

I will hold judgement until the consoles are actually tested then my money will go accordingly

Regardless of whats specs are what i will and always will continue to play on xbox because it is the standard in the competitive gaming scene. Until Sony can drastically step up its support of the competitive scene in reasonable comparison or greater then xbox/microsoft i dont really care if their stuff was 99% better. The competitive community over there is just terrible almost as bad or non existent as nintendo, at least in the states.

RUSENSITIVESWEETNESS

Every last exec at Microsoft is a condescending smart-ass? Every last one? Are they all pricks? Have they never employed a single decent human being?

How can an entire company have such disdain for their customers and survive? Everything I've read for the past couple years has been dripping with sarcasm, elitism, and spite.

If ever a company deserved to fail, it's Microsoft. I hope those assholes box themselves in with their mobile operating system and lose everything. They completely deserve it.

Your comment could easily replace "Microsoft" with "Sony" and your rant would still ring the same.

Recall that Sony released over 100 albums that would silently install a rootkit (eventually) on millions of computers, and when exposed by Mark Russinovich, a condescending Sony exec argued that it's a non-issue because most people don't even know what a rootkit is. Then they released a "fix" that didn't work. And it was well over a year before they released a list of the albums that would install the malware.

It took cojones to publicly state that the HD format war would be eventually be decided (and won) because of their game system, which included a Blu-ray drive...and then a few weeks later Walmart announced they wouldn't carry HD-DVD anymore, and THAT'S what immediately decided the format war.

Sony called the 3DS a "babysitting toy" compared to the PS Vita. We all know how well that worked for them.

Heard of the Memory Stick? Up until a few years ago, buy one of their devices, and pay three times the going rate for storage. Oh, Sony so loves all of their other proprietary products, too: UMD, minidisc, ATRAC, etc. They're arrogant enough to think they'll win with proprietary products, but they eventually included support for Secure Digital, just like they jumped to manufacturing VHS machines.

If ever a company deserved to fail, it's Sony.

avatar

Bryan98801

You could say the same about any leading tech company out there. It's a pretty universal attitude. Proprietary is just a normal tactic to sell products. Apple much? So both of you are correct.

what counts is whats on the table and for me it is reliability, my original phat ps3 is still alive and kicking (metaphorically) while i've seen many xbox 360 with hardware issues.

What really started my disdain for micrsoft was that to get 5.1 and HDMI for the xbox i needed to buy a special kit and to have a rechargeable battery i had to fork out a lot of money. To connect that 360 controller to the pc you need a special wireless connector thing because the Gods know why they didnt allow a connection to work directly from the usb. (the ps3 remote simply needs a manual driver/tool installation to work on the pc)

At the end it costed way more than my ps3 simply to have it perform worst by making my expensive sound system play a low end lossy dolby digital format.

And we're talking about proprietary stuff? The xbox needed a proprietary hard drive or memory card simply to save your files because the geniuses knew no one could get around that except for using a memory stick. BUT OH WAIT! they disallowed those from being used for saving games.

All that NOT bundled with the cheap unreliable console Microsoft gave us for a deceivingly cheap price.

avatar

legionera

High class problems I sense in this one. Uhm!

Oh the irony!

Has an expensive 5.1, can't afford a $10 receiver or a $2 HDMI cable and a $3 rechargable battery. Let's don't forget that along with those red ring Xboxex many PS3 died from overheating as well.

You have to install the entire game on the PS3, that does not leave space for anything else. In the end, you end up deleting games because you don't have enough room to install and play the new ones. Please comment on that.

avatar

limitbreaker

The problem is not a lack of hdmi cable, if you had put any thought at all into what I posted you wouldn't have made so many ridiculous claims.

You can't charge rechargeable batteries through the remote so even if it only costed 3$ it would be almost as bad as non rechargeable batteries.

The receiver cost 25$ on Amazon... Not 10$

The problem is that the 360 has the very old hdmi 1.2 which doesn't support anything other than stereo sound so a simple hdmi cable won't be enough you need optical to get surround sound which you can't have unless you block the hdmi port. Without the 50$ adapter your stuck with the ancient RGB cable.

The very first ps3 models with the 60gb/20gb model did have overheating issues. They used the 85nm version of the cell chip but they still lasted a very long time. You can't even compare the two, I looked it up and about 33% of 360 have reported the rrod compared to the 1% of the ps3 reporting the ylod.

If you have have so many games that even the stock hdd can't hold down you can replace it with any 2.5" hdd. But talking about that, I remember trying to play lost Odyssey without an installation and it was almost unplayable.

avatar

jbitzer

Actually, HDMI 1.0 is capable of 8 channels of sound. HDMI 1.3 introduced Dolby truHD and DTS-HD which were lossless codecs. The games on Xbox only support dolby digital however, which is still a compressed format.

Only for the HD-DVD addon would the lack of 1.3 matter and only then if the film was TRUHD or DTS-HD. Most people's receivers at that time didn't even support those formats. You are confusing the 2 channel PCM supported by HDMI 1.2 with Stereo. They are different things.

avatar

limitbreaker

I stand corrected, but I do know that you couldn't get surround through the hdmi on the xbox, I tried.

avatar

jbitzer

turn off the autodetect in the sound preferences, there is a bug with it supposedly.

I use HDMI and have always been able to get surround.

avatar

jbitzer

Don't forget their wireless spec for the controllers was patented, and they made peripheral manufacturers pay out the nose to use it. That's why the original rock band stuff was wired on Xbox.

It seems to me that the the merits of the Ps4's better hardware will not be seen until the very end of the coming generation (5-8 years from now). I say this because a great portion of AAA games coming out in the next two years will be released for 360, ps3, ps4, and Xbox-one. These games wont use the full potential of the new generations power. It wont be until the end of the generation that developers have fully figured out how to juice the systems for all of their power that we will see performance advantages in the ps4's favor.

avatar

EKRboi

All this back and forth on whose console is better, the specs bashing. My 2 1/2 year old PC has better specs than either of them. If you really care about specs.. build a gaming pc.

avatar

captainjack

As a PC gamer I do care about the coming console generations' specs. While PC's will always be more powerful, the specs of this generation will determine the maximum quality of AAA gaming for at least 5 years. I mean, isn't the current complaint "developers are being held back on PC ports because of how old the 360 and Ps3 are?" The same will be true on the tail end of this upcoming generation.

avatar

ApathyCurve

This is like watching two people play tennis: I don't care who wins. In fact, I don't care to stay and watch the match.

avatar

tetlecie

Funny thing is a very small per cent of the world are tech enthusiast and don't really care about the individual specs on each console. its all going to be about the games, gaming experience and price. I personally play games on PC and on both consoles but I find it much easier to play a console game. Most consumers will choose what they like base on games and a true gamer will eventually on both and I know I will but wont be an early buyer unless it is a gift for Christmas. I know I will own both by next year summer. So the back and forth about specs is pointless because it wont be the deciding factor... This argument is fuel by cocky tech personnel in each company and those of us who choose to read these articles.

avatar

wolfing

who cares, in the end all games (except those bought off by MS or Sony to be exclusives) will run fine in both platforms, and nobody will care if there are 10, 15 or pi processors inside the box. They will just 'work'.

avatar

LatiosXT

I saw this before on another website, pointing out serious flaws with the arguments.

What's the most funny one? They guy combined the bandwidth of the DDR3 RAM and ESRAM and said that's the performance of the One's memory. Clearly this guy is a marketer.

Now here is the juicy rumor floating around the web: Microsoft's XBox One has a external GPU die tucked away under the the AMD APU. The 175 square mm chip is actually part of the new Volcano family of AMD Radeon chips that will be formally announced on Sept 26 with a presentation by AMD. ON THE SAME DAY, MS is scheduled to have a special press conference, topic unknown.
The reason that this external high powered GPU has yet to be announced is due to a strong NDA in place and to prevent any sort of response in hardware changes by SONY as they will be deep in their console production cycle.
There has been just a couple of "leaks" but most developers have NOT been privy to this information, only a few AAA developers know about it.

This is a RUMOR, nothing more. It does explain two things tho. What exactly MS spent $3 BILLION dollars with AMD and IBM for on the XBox One chipset and why MS is dissing the PS4.

Time will tell, but what a bombshell if this is true!

avatar

limitbreaker

This rumor is not very realistic, the hidden gpu wouldn't have access to the esram which is the only thing keeping the xbone afloat in murky waters. Besides, the negative press isn't really worth keeping such a thing secret and for Sony to respond it would take much longer than the timeframe left to them. Microsoft is so desperate... They are probably starting these rumors themselves hoping to help push more hardware out.

avatar

opulent_rigs

Hey John, actually Microsoft nipped that rumor in the bud a few days back. Here's the link: https://twitter.com/albertpenello/status/377210559235514368

avatar

John Pombrio

Oh rats! Well, there is the old rumor of more GPU cores on the die itself to fall back on, heh.

avatar

SilverSurferNHS

"far more easier"
Do you even English?

avatar

The faster cpu is only due to overclocks... I can't wait to see which form the new red ring of death is going to take a year down the road.

avatar

PCLinuxguy

considering that these two consoles are almost identical in specs for under the hood, it seems rather funny all the mud slinging MS is doing to say how much better theirs is when TBH "better" is subjective to the end user. They even admitted that side by side they both look and perform excellently and even admitted that it'd be noticeable if there was a difference. They also go on to say that comparing specs is meaningless only to turn around and compare individual HW spec with Penello using specs to try and convince that the XBoxOne is the superior of the two. alot of flip-flopping going it seems.

avatar

AFDozerman

Sounds like a desperate move to convince the masses that the Xbox isn't a complete turd. That being said, I haven't heard much about this cloud processing that Microsoft was supposedly working on rolling out for the new Xbox.

avatar

Axel011

The next few years are probably going to be rough for the xbox if Microsoft keeps approaching things the way the normally do.

avatar

limitbreaker

Except that the esram is 32mb in size and even if the theoretical speed is really 272gb /s it is only good for a total of about 48mb at that speed. I'd stick with 8gb at 172gb/s :-) ty
