Microsoft Invites Testers for New Xbox 360 Disc Format

Microsoft’s Major Nelson today called on US-based Xbox 360 owners to participate in an upcoming “public preview to help us prepare for an updated Xbox 360 disc format.” Calling it an “important update,” he revealed in a blog post that Microsoft is on the lookout for “multiple thousands” of testers. More details await you after the jump.

The public preview is restricted to Xbox Live members residing in the continental U.S., for it involves disc distribution. At this point, it isn’t known what is meant by a new Xbox 360 disc format. What could it possibly be? Is this Microsoft’s latest anti-piracy measure, or could it be something to do with the amount of data that can be stored on a DVD?

All successful applicants are guaranteed to receive a free copy of Halo Reach, with the further possibility of other rewards. You can register for the program by visiting this page on the Microsoft Connect site.
