What is the point of a resolution beyond 1080p on a gaming laptop?

The hardware already has enough work to do being in such a small space and having less effective cooling than most desktop setups. I have used 1440p for gaming and while it does add more crispness to the images, I never really thought it was worth the extra hit on the GPU.

I guess if the laptop is being used as a workstation, that bump in resolution would be nice, but as a pure gaming system it seems too high.
