Just so people understand, technically speaking, there's nothing about ChromeOS that makes it any less capable than any other platform. The latest web standards include offline storage APIs, file system APIs, 2D and 3D graphics APIs, audio APIs, multi threading APIs, network socket and P2P APIs, hardware device APIs, local database APIs, notification APIs, the list goes on...

Any application you can think of could be rewritten in HTML/JavaScript. There's even Emscripten (https://github.com/kripken/emscripten) which can transcompile virtually any programming language into JavaScript code. Besides the fact that a loosely typed scripting language like JavaScript can never match the performance of optimized C++ code, and for some reason Google seems to make it a requirement to have less than 32GB of hard drive space in any ChromeOS device, ChromeOS is absolutely a viable platform. And it happens to be built on one of the most open and royalty free software standards in history.

Developers will start moving there over time, and 10 years from now we'll all have ChromeOS devices or the equivalent from the competition. Windows 8/RT is already there as well, it treats HTML/JavaScript as a native language for Windows Store Apps.

It's not useless, just too far ahead of its time. The web is a completely legitimate programming platform, although the software isn't in the place as of yet.

Thank God somebody on this website gets it...

As useless as I consider Chromebooks this is worse by far. Why, why would someone get this?
I was in a local big box store and saw a couple perusing Chromebooks. I thought maybe they didn't know any better and thought it was a real laptop so I talked to them. They said they had to get a Chromebook for their daughter for school. I told them I was sorry. It made me wonder if maybe that's what has been driving Chromebook sales.

Great, so now our desktops can be 100% useless without internet access too. If Google had its way, the only device around that would be functional when the internet went down would be our phones.

Has anyone seen the ads for that rip-off "WOW" computer, a locked-down Linux computer designed for "seniors"? This LG product is an inferior version of that.

If you run Chrome on a real computer, through a real OS, what functionality with Google's services are you lacking vs running ChromeOS? Why does ChromeOS exist when Google has (and hasn't mastered) Android?

I find it easy to understand users wanting an alternative to Windows at this point. I find it baffling that Chrome OS would be high on the list.

Still, it's encouraging that the status quo is starting to shift. GNU/Linux is gaining traction with the release of SteamOS, and it's even remotely possible - depending on its choice of CEO - that Microsoft might still be dragged back to the realms of sanity.

Convince me that I can use a chrome device anonymously and that everything I search is not being recorded to be used by killer google robots to hunt me down in the future simply because they know what I googled last summer and I'm ready to buy right now

All you have to do is convince me

Easy huh?

All this talk of new encryption to keep out the NSA and Gov't spying and to protect the users privacy is bullshit

If you want to protect the users privacy, then sell us a similar device that we do not need a personal account to logon with and stop tracking everything we do

That way, you won't know who used our chrome device and for what purpose and cannot I.D. the user with your drones and killer robots

No?
Diddn't think so

Killer Robots?
Yeah
FUNDED BY DARPA.......
...and Sold to Google!

Is there anything else you need to know?

You could try getting ChromiumOS on there. The open source version of ChromeOS before Google adds in any code they don't want people to see.

With that being said, what the hell are you doing on your computer that you're so worried about somebody else seeing it?
