HP died when Carly Fiorina took over (1999). One of the founder's sons even wrote the obituary when she beat down the shareholder revolt over destroying the company. The real mistake was whoever allowed the board of directors that hired her get control, they still haven't managed to hire a non-disaster as CEO.

Good to see, I dislike HP a lot.

The tragedy is that it is said that the silicon valley was founded in their garage (1939). By 1990 they still incredibly profitable and probably the best place in the world for EEs to work. Somehow the board of directors lost their minds, the entire company shifted to software, and the board decided to hire a marketing wiz from Lucent (take our gear and pay us whenever) for CEO.

I don't know when the last time Bill Hewlett or Dave Packard would recognize their company, but it wasn't this century.

I think there was a story somewhere 12+ months ago that some Lenovo executive claimed they would crush the competition in the coming year(s). This is one of those rare tech stories that might have worked out very close to the boasting claims.

With the number of products Lenovo has thrown in the distribution channel it's clear they were very serious. I really like the Yoga, and would appreciate seeing it with a Haswell chip and a better screen. It's the ideal device for 40-65 year-olds right now. That generation, even mine in their 30's, still really appreciates the physical keyboard. But there's no denying the tablet cool factor and portable functionality.

How long before Lenovo takes on portable gaming seriously?

Give them time as they just entered the PC gaming market with the Erazer desktop. They do make tablets and smartphones as well (if you include those as portable gaming devices).
