" When Google releases Android for PCs, there will be true Linux adoption. I use Ubuntu now but Android could reach the masses. That would be a major game changer."

But Android OS is not "true" Linux. Android OS is more like Linux' better, more popular cousin. So while Android is doing fairly well in the mobile market,(second place to iOS still,)that doesn't mean it will repeat that in the laptop market. And even if it were to somehow capture a nice chunk of that market, it's still not Linux.

Android still runs the Linux kernel underneath, just like all the other OSes built on Linux (Arch, Debian, etc) so truth" doesn't really take part. That's like saying Windows 8 is not true Windows because the NT kernel it runs is different in any from what was powering XP or Vista. However I am open to more information.

Think you meant iOS is in second place.

And Android gets more robust with every release. We have already seen multiple attempts at webtop devices. We may yet see a version of Android capable of handling the task of running a full desktop environment.

No I don't. I go by Netmarketshare because they don't use sales based analytics they use actual clients connecting to websites analytics. I feel their method is more accurate since it's based on use, not sales figures quoted by companies that can often be misleading. And according to their metrics, iOS (iphones and iPads) is at 61.05% and Android (phones and tablets) is only at 21.58%. Number of phones/tablets shipped means jack if they are sitting in a box in a backroom doing nothing.

Does it come rooted? With those specs it is just a weak smartphone that has had a keyboard grafted on. Is that screen really only HD?!! If so, then this really is just a mutilated Samsung Galaxy SIII.

If it has A10 in the name I think that it should actually sport an AMD A10 processor.

Why is the PC industry running itself into the ground??

avatar

Vano

Microsoft with windows 8 does

Maybe in 5 years, we'll have socketed desktop-class ARM procs... it's a nice thought, although the porting would take forever. For awhile, there would mostly just be FOSS ports and a few niche proprietary supporters. That could be a goood thing or a bad thing.

Isn't that special (said the same way the church lady from SNL would say it)
Great, just great , now Apple is going to have to release an iOS based laptop to show who has the biggest penis. And you know who is going to buy these laptops? No one! Just a dumb idea that is going to cost millions of investor dollars to realize it was a dumb idea. I'm on my iPad and I'm happy with iOS on my iPad because I love the portability and ease of use, but if I were on a laptop I would not want android or iOS because extreme portability isn't my main goal then, running more powerful desktop programs is what I'm going to be doing so I'm going to want either Windows, Mac OS, or Linux to get the job done. You can't do anymore on an android laptop than you can on a cheap android tablet or phone. I would rather see more Linux laptops with printer support built in because getting Linux to work with any printer is damn near impossible.

avatar

davelray

What printer are you using that Linux cannot pick up and use? I have a Brother laser network printer, a HP LJ1200, and an Epson RX580 and they all work just fine on my Ubuntu box.

avatar

AFDozerman

Still using a printer in 2013?

avatar

maverick knight

What makes you think that printers are obsolete? I may give you faxing but it still has its uses. You still need to print those discount coupons, air fare tickets, concert and sports tickets, heck even pictures.

avatar

I have to use my printer and FAX for work.

avatar

AFDozerman

Ah. I know that feel.

avatar

jimmthang

Still, this or the chromebook though?

avatar

Keith E. Whisman

Neither, just buy an iPad or cheap $350 laptop with either Linux or windows on it. Even Walmart sells decent cheap laptops that'll get all your office, school, internet and movie watching chores done.

depends on the printer. I've had some that refused to work and others that were simple plug and play like in Windows.
