There is a lot to like here. Being able to drive a high res display via DisplayPort is pretty cool. The only thing that holds me back from using one of these as a desktop workstation replacement (mounted to the VESA mount on my monitor) is the fact that you can't use a laptop drive in one. If Intel gives us a version that's a little thicker and can accommodate a hard drive, I'm all in.

I bet my 480p DVD will look great on a 4k-screen. And I just plug this NUC-box into it and go? Great!

It would be nice if one of these units could be had with a real video card. I'd love to basically have a tiny little steambox in my living room. I have been unimpressed by the intel onboard graphics, I remember when magazines were so falling over themselves trying to play up that Larrimar (was that the name?) was going to put Nvidia and AMD in a hurt locker.

If AMD would be able to make a GOOD graphics chip on an APU, it could make me take notice of them again.

I would love to see AMD fit a gaming-grade APU into an enclosure like this. As is, there are AMD chips in some of these mini computers, but none of them are gaming-grade. AMD seems to be pushing for it though with the upcoming 45 watt APUs. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

That's what I'm trying to say. I don't want the best IGP that's not as good as the worst discrete card.

Remember when people thought using on board sound was a crime against humanity?

I wish graphics would undergo a similar transformation.

AMD mops the floor with Intel in regards to IGP on their APU chips. I mean if youj're using an E series APU then not so much but a Trinity or Richland A8/A10 would be the way to go for a Good graphics chip

I know AMD is better than intel in IGP, but that's like saying they have the best kick in the nuts.

Still. their top tier APUs do have a good graphics core on them. IGP will never compare to a good midrange card, but I'll take an APU any day of the week for IGP

It's amazing how close we are to having a SteamBox or something like it to be able to compete with consoles for the living room. Its one of those so close but so far away moments.

I would like this for Photoshop editing.
I don't game on pc anymore. Plus it's small and I could hide it behind my two monitors.

I doubt HD5000 could play anything worthwhile at 4K. Maybe TF2 at minimum settings..

I think it's supposed to be geared for video playback, not gaming.

avatar

PCLinuxguy

I know the HD4000 can do 720p for video maybe 1080p with enough system memory but gaming at high res is a no-go regardless.

That's what I mean. They keep throwing out this whole "4K" monkier like it can play Crysis 3 at 4K while GPGPU rendering the whole universe at the same time.

no one expects anything with an intel graphics chip to hi rez any games. However it should be able to stream movies at the highest settings. Looks like it is designed to compete with other devices meant to stream video to living room tv's, with the added benefit of being a real computer.
