Intel Unveils Dual-Core Clover Trail+ Atom Chip for Mobile

Clover Trail+ represents Intel's push into smartphone and tablet territory.

Intel waited until the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Spain to formally introduce a new dual-core Atom System-on-Chip (SoC) platform for smartphones and Android tablets. Previously codenamed Clover Trail+, Intel is targeting both performance and mainstream market segments. According to Intel, it's new chip provides double the compute performance and three times the graphics capabilities compared to its Atom Z2460 platform.

There are three new Atom chips in all -- Z2580, Z2560, and Z2520 -- available in speeds up to 2GHz, 1.6GHz, and 1.2GHz, respectively. Each one features Hyper-Threading technology with support for four simultaneous application threads.

On the all-important graphics side, the integrated platform includes an Intel GMA engine with a graphics core supporting up to 533MHz (with boost mode) and Full HD 1080p hardware accelerated vide encode and decode at 30fps.

"Our second-generation product delivers double the compute performance and up to three times the graphics capabilities, all while maintaining competitive low power," said Hermann Eul , Intel vice president and co-general manager of the Mobile and Communications Group. "As we transition to 22nm Atom SoCs later this year, we will take full advantage of the broad spectrum of capabilities enabled by our design, architecture, 22nm tri-gate transistor technology, and leading-edge manufacturing to further accelerate our position."

Also included in the new Atom platform is support for a two-camera imaging system, with a primary camera sensor up to 16MP.

Asus, Lenovo, and ZTE have all announced support for Clover Trail+.
