" Bioshock may be nearly four years olds, but K-putt manages to make it look like new. "

Try seven years old... or was this a copy paste issue

Thanks for the catch! I'm not sure how seven turned into four, but it's fixed now!

"Art form"?

I think you'll find a lot of screenshot hobbyists also dislike calling this "art." But there are people who are hired specifically for taking screenshots of games for promotional purposes. And those people are likely very skillful in finding compositions and framing that required in professional photography. The official title of that job also happens to be "screenshot artist." Both things require a very artistic mind to do well.

Sure, it's taking pictures of art that the game's dev team came up with, but it's very often the case that the dev team is not skilled in showing off that art in still images with great composition that capture the mood\atmosphere of the game at the same time. Call it what you want, but K-Putt is pretty good at that. Far better than the average gamer just pressing print screen when they see something pretty.

I'm kind of on the fence with this being called art by the people doing the captures. The credit should be going to the game designers for creating the worlds that make the screen caps worth taking. On the other hand, it does take a trained eye to see the nuances in lighting and mood.

Most people doing the captures don't call it art. But to do this well requires the same artistic mind required in photography. Good composition does not come naturally. I know this because I've been a screenshot hobbyist like K-Putt for 3 years, and I while I can recognize good composition, I can rarely pull it off in my own shots.

And who's to say the credit is not going to the game designers? Hell, half the time we take screenshots just so certain games get more attention.

To add on, K-putt never described himself as an artist. It's a label that we felt was appropriate for the level of work that he consistently produces.

I see it this way: art design and graphics may be set in stone, but it takes a special person to frame it in a way that makes everything pop. Cutscenes are one of the ways that developers themselves can control framing, but enthusiasts/artists like jim2point0 and K-putt help fill the void.

After all, can anybody argue that photography isn't an art form? Framing, composition, and a little bit of editing make a world of difference.
