"MOSTLY a two horse race"? Since when did MOSTLY mean 0.0%? 65% (nVidia) + 35% (AMD) = 100% of the AIB market. How about changing "mostly" to "ENTIRELY"

Perhaps it is just new math.. or an article you meant instead to put up on HotHardware.com :-)

There are other players with fractional market share Via, PowerVR, etc.

Actually he's right. When it comes to video card manufacturers, there's only two players in the market.

When it comes to GPU choices as a whole, then yes, there are other players.

How about none of the above. It's got everything to do with the introduction of Scrypt ASICs to cryptocurrency mining and the rise in difficulty forcing GPU miners to shut down and sell their rigs. The ROI through mining just isn't enough to justify the expense in electricity nowadays.

However, don't be surprised to see NVidia start to make some headway in this market with the introduction of Maxwell (it has an unbelievable power consumption/hashrate ratio), especially for those of us looking to mine those coins that are ASIC-resistant (algorithms such as X-11 and Scrypt-N for example). The 750ti is widely considered to be the best "bang for your long-term buck" as a result.

These ASICs don't appear to be all that expensive. What is the purpose in trying to artificially keep GPUs in the cryptocurrency mining race?

GPU mining keeps the playing field somewhat level and prevents the centralization of the coin. The first Bitcoin ASICs were pretty expensive but dropped measurably once competition entered the market. That still didn't prevent the few from becoming majority holders though. They just had the buying power and could outspend any small to mid-size mining operation.

im going to take a wild guess and say the lull is because the seasons are warmer and people are outside more now than in winter, so they arent worried about the newest gpu. I know for me, there are days now i dont even turn on my pc

Nothing worse then being cooped up on a PC for the entire cold winter waiting for Maxwell 800 series to come out =)
