What will our beloved criminals drive? Everyone with a warrant will have to walk or risk an unexpected trip to the nearest police station.

Kind of reminds me of "IRobot" when Will Smith is in his self driving floaty car, and he has to switch it to manual mode. Even in the future steering wheels will be necessary in case of emergencies.

or Minority Report, when Tom Cruise's autopilot car is hijacked via remote control and there is no override and so he has to bail out.

That lack of a steering wheel and pedals is utterly stupid. There are (and most likely always will be) places where there is no a) cell reception, b) no GPS reception, c) no satellite reception, and d) no data to refer to.

The first example I can think of is underground parking structures. 4 stories undergound means your GPS and cell and wifi reception is...uh... kind of non-existent, pavement markings are sometimes ambiguous, and visibility is very restricted.

I get the 'simplified interface' idea... it works so well in W8 ;)... but it's also simple to build in recessed controls that pop out when you hit the big red 'manual override' button.

However, a lack of a steering wheel isn't this thing's primary fault... It's how the thing looks.

Strange as it may seem, I imagined that self-driving cars would always have steering wheels installed so as to facilitate places where navigation doesn't work, or non-conventional road systems (like large unmarked parking lots, or open fields with employees directing traffic, etc..). I'm a little amazed that this is even an issue.

Nice, Google! Can't wait to see Google compete with all the auto mfg's someday. You got your Ford, GM, Chrysler, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Audi, VW, and... Google.

Honestly, I trust google with this stuff. They know what they're doing.

It's a good move, because no matter how great our technology may be, it can still fail.
