GammaTech's Rugged R13C Convertible Comes Ready to Wrestle Polar Bears

We try to steer clear of explosive atmospheres, freezing conditions, and sand storms whenever possible, but if there's no way around it, you can bet we'll leave our Ultrabook at home. A more appropriate companion is a rugged PC designed for harsh environments, and GammaTech claims its new Durabook R13C convertible is the type of PC that's perfectly suited for law enforcement, military, homeland security, field service, mining, and mobile works in any type of outdoor environment.

The R13C is an upgraded version of GammaTech's R13S. It's both powerful and more rugged with "many additional features or enhancements that were not available when the R13S was introduced," according to Jen Chen , GammaTech president.

Rugged on the outside and fairly well spec'd on the inside, the R13C is a 13.3-inch convertible that can be used as a tablet or a notebook. An Intel Core i7 620LM vPro processor runs the show and is flanked by up to 8GB of DDR3-1333 RAM, 2.5-inch shock-mounted SATA HDD (SSD is optional), slim-type DVD burner, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, WWAN (HSDPA/GPRS/GSM/WCDMA), GPS receiver support, Bluetooth, 8-cell battery, and a variety of OS options.

The R13C passes Military Standard 810G certification for drop, shock, and spill protection, and explosive atmosphere, salt, fog, and freeze/thaw standards. All that remains is a price, and for that, you'll have to get in touch with GammaTech for a quote (also available through authorized resellers nationwide, though GammaTech didn't say for how much).
