Ok, so it's late summer 2009 and one by one all of my magazine subscriptions have been coming up for renewal. I subscribe to the following magazines:

MPC
Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords
Popular Mechanics
Hot Rod
Car And Driver
Road & Track
Automobile
Motor Trend
Reader's Digest

While poking around on these magazines' websites looking for the newest offers I discovered "Digital subscription". This, of course, is a paperless magazine subscription. You download a "reader" program (called Zinio) and it checks daily for new issues of magazines you subscribe to. YOu can either read the magazines online or download them for reading offline. The digital subscription rates are usually a few dollars cheaper than the paper rates, but it gets even better for non-Americans: It is a perfect idea for a Canadian like me, who doesn't want to pay the extra $10-25/yr on top of the subscription rate most magazines charge for paper delivery to Canada. There is no danger of losing a mag in the mail, it will not be drippy soggy wet when it arrives, and chances are small that the mail man reads it before it gets to me. Even the advertisers win out, because in the digital magazines the ads are intact (unlike MPC's PDF archive). And finally, much to the delight of my partner, there are no magazines laying around the house and piling up with each passing month (I have thousands of old magazines dating from 1982-2009, can't bear to toss 'em).

So, in the list of magazines I mentioned above, EVERY ONE OF THEM is available for digital subscription... except one. I see no "Digital" option for renewing a subscription to MPC. I would have thought that MPC would be on the forefront of technology, so why does the magazine insist on dead-tree-delivery? Shouldn't a "cutting edge" magazine have a cutting edge delivey method?

...And yes, I'm aware that MPC does offer back-issues for free in a PDF download. That's fine and well if you don't mind waiting months after the newest issues hit the newsstand (for example, Sept is in newsstands now, May is the newest available PDF). And I'm also aware that most of the magazine's features appear online anyway, and that the "news" section is the best place for updated-daily news. It's still not the same. I want my MPC, I want it digitally, and I want it NOW!

So why can't I have it?

Subscribers to the dead tree edition have access to our digital edition through coverleaf.com.

http://maximumpc.coverleaf.com/maximumpc/200909/

If you click the purchase options, you can choose either the digital-only or a dead-tree + digital option.

Cheers,

///Will

Ok, thanks Wil, I found it. Oddly, it's not on Maximum PC's own "subscribe" page (I only see one and two year paper subscription options), but it's on the coverleaf one. If anyone else is interested in eschewing the dead trees the link to subscribe digitally is here:

I really like the digital addition. It makes a nice companion to my hard copy of the mag. Its nice being able to just click on the links.

Seriously, though .. a year of MPC for less than the price of a single issue on the newstand .. and I don't have to wait for it to arrive in the mail.

Nothing but win here, folks.

In Canada .. last time I checked, the price on the newstand was 8.95 or 9.95.

I read the January 2010 issue before I got it in the mail. I couldn't help myself. LOL
