Summer to Remember 2009 Contest - Closed to entries

It's ON Click Here

Background:

This is the 3rd or 4th year for a summer contest.
I believe each was better than the last and expect to be able to say that again this year.

It wouldn't happen at all but for the generosity of many on the MaximumPC team.

They reach deep and also share their hardware that no longer fits their picture of how they want to fold.

Lets have another successful summer and continue to do all we can to help VJ to help the world find the cures.

Ways to enter

1. Start a friend folding under their own username after the contest starts.

Have them post that you are the reason they started folding.
If they continue until after the drawing, you and they are entered in whatever tier they qualify for.
If it's tier 1, both can enter either tier.
Of course we would like your friend and you to continue folding as long as we're needed and entering many more contests in the future.

2. Do a SpotLight

This method is no longer available.
Details on the first page of the thread when they went

Three people can gain entry to any tier they choose by doing a spotlight.
About 6 related pictures and avoiding very short answers and you have it made.
If I need more, I'll ask you for it.

This is a great way to enter.
Spotlights go on inspiring people to join forever.
I had one folder comment he read them all and thought they were great.
He had to break them up into several sessions to get them all done.

To do one should only take 1-3 hours effort, depending on your ease with writing.
One person took 6 months, I doubt he worked on it continuously.

PM me for a Questionnaire and be one of the three.

3. Add new hardware and provide a picture.

A while back we had to provide a method of entry for people who folded on Subteams.
Their production is not available for everyone to see, so increasing production was out the window.

This worked well for them and was of course extended to everyone else as a method to enter.
It has the advantage that you don't have to maintain your new production level.
If something happens and your production should fall, you're still in the bowl.
What could happen?
Unanticipated need to travel
moving and losing broadband
Tornado
The list goes on.

What counts:
A new GPU that can fold
A quad core
An upgrade to a quad core
PS3
Ask on others

If in your house (farm) - tier 1
If recruited - tier 2

Must fold through the drawing at least.

4. Increased production (most common method used)

**********************************************

Here is the list provided by thunar - - - - Click Here - - - -

**********************************************

Gary wanted the points required increased this year for the same reason Jason wants to up the points required to get in the red on EOC.

I'm not going as high as he suggested and won't even tell you those numbers to protect him from hate mail.

This year if you want in tier 1 on points you must beat the number on the list by 1000.

If you want tier 2 you must beat the number on the list by 500.

Any hate mail directed at me will not improve your odds of winning.

When Does it start

If you are reading this sentence, it has started for points and all other ways to enter.

When does it end?

Sept 8, 2009 at midnight EST

Drawing the next day.

If you are in the bowl after smartcat checks the production entries are all still legal, the lovely Rose will mix up the Bingo covers in the bowl and draw a series of numbers.

The first winner in each tier will select their prize, Normally everyone provides their choices in sequence to cover all prizes in their tier.
This allows things to progress rapidly during the day when many are not available to make a choice.
I say rapidly, but not many would agree.
I'm accused of taking way to long every year.

Note: For entries (of all types) it ends Aug 18,2009 at Midnight EST.

You must continue to fold (if you entered on points) until the drawing.

Who can enter

Any folder active on MaximumPC - no other teams, sorry.

Who can't enter

No one with the last name Smitheman.

Anyone I'm folding for can't enter on points.

What happens if I win?

If you are a winner, you should post how excited you are and state you are doing the dance of joy in front of the monitor.

Next you send gsmitheman your mailing address (after checking it's correct at least three times).

The old guy will pass it on to the donator of the prize you won.

Why bother sending it to the old guy, why not directly to the person with the prize?

The old guy needs to know things are getting done, so the end result is everyone is happy, or as close as we can get to that status.

Most times it is 100%

Notes:

1. You are not entered if your name is not in the second post in tier 1 or tier 2
Smartcat will enter it there when he finds it in this thread.

If you entered on points he will insure you meet the requirement.
He will check again just before the drawing that you still meet the requirements (with software) no emotion.
We really drop you from the bowl at that time if you fall below the requirement (please don't let it happen, or be pissed off if it does).

If you entered on hardware he will want to see the picture.

Spotlight entry he will see it exists

Friend folding he will want to see the friends post crediting you for showing him or her the light and the path to 24/7/365 fun.

Do not change your post to make a change, make a new post so smartcat has a chance to see it.

You can only change tiers on swap day, when that is is up to smartcat.

2. Choices, changes - why is this thing so complicated?

One man's complicated is another man's flexible and fun.

Stretch yourself, read it again, ask questions.

3. Well there you have it.

A prize list that should blow anyones mind.

I believe and I hope you do, that entering is not the hard part.

For some it's reading all that stuff above and making sense out of it.

For most it's trying to figure what tier to enter.

Tier 1 with outrageous prizes but more entries, so less chance to win.

Tier 2 with more prizes and some damn nice ones at that, not to mention fewer people in the bowl to compete with at drawing time.

We show no mercy, at the very end, after you made your decision about tiers, you get one chance to change your mind, if eligible. to the other tier.

And finally on the day of the drawing the old guy seems to go so damn slow, has all kinds of problems, even stops for lunch.

I wouldn't be surprised this year to see him that a nap.

We need a new old guy.

JD2299 has requested a SpotLight questionnaire.

That leaves 2 more people an easy entry into the Summer to Remember.

You're not as dull as you think you are, and if I'm wrong, we will spice you up a bit.

You only have to tell us the parts you want to.

You can leave out the three years behind bars and the episode in Las Vegas.
Probably no one will see that particular Cops show.

They showed up on a search for cops.
Could still be embarrassing in a SpotLight

No website
Just google for cops - images and pick a picture that suits the situation.

I thought it looked embarrassing enough to suit the situation.

Two more SpotLight Questionnaires were requested.

If all three follow through, the SpotLight entry option is closed and you all will have three spotlights to enjoy reading during the summer.

I'll get them completed and space them out as the contest rolls on.

Summer to remember hasn't started yet.
Except for the Spotlight entries and start a friend

Hardware added will be after the start along with point increases.

But not to worry, the summer is long and many possibilities will present themselves.

The goal is not to make it hard to enter.

Just thought provoking to get in and also to pick a tier, decide to swap or not at the last minute.
Enjoy winning or watching others do it and dance for joy.

If we hold up well through the heat we can call the summer a success.

Whathuhitwasntme has returned his spotlight already.

You should see it in a week or two.

It's not a record return time, but damn close.

The record is still 1 hour complete with pictures.

Even if you can't get a contest entry for a spotlight, do one anyway.

If you think you don't look good enough, check out my SpotLight and then reconsider.

No one whos done a SpotLight has been harmed in the process or afterward that I know of.

If you continue to fold for MPC, and meet one of the entry requirements, I don't see why not. But I'm new, don't take it as gospel.

Ted

Not on stuff you already have folding is the correct answer.

But we have so many people not on their own username right now that things are out of control.

Show us a picture of something that starting folding after the contest starts or increase your production by the amount you will soon see in the thread, from the amount thunar traps that you are doing.

The goal of the contest is people continue folding as much as possible during the hot summer.

Some people have no problem with work footing the bill or 1 -2 machines that run everyday anyway.

Others run so much on their own dime that A/C on top is a back breaker.

We each do what we can and in the past it's been enough.

We may see some promos this summer and new folders will start and learn.
They will be excited about folding and growing right into the fall winter breakout that comes every year.

If we can whittle away the Australian lead we may have cause to celebrate in early 2010.
I expect they will pick up the pace very soon.

I hope I answered your question, I tried.

Basically, you look for opportunities within the rules to be in the bowl in early Sept.

If you still are unsure about anything, PM me.

I don't know if anyone cares, but I wanted to make something clear so I can't be accused of trying to tank PPD numbers for the Summer contest.

I haven't been gaming since the CC ended due to lack of time. So my current numbers (30-31k PPD) are peak values (all clients running 24/7). But I'm starting to get time back, so my numbers will drop.

I bring this up because I don't want to start running out of time in the future and have it look like I did it intentionally to get into the Summer contest that way. I expect to average ~24-26k PPD or so while gaming (I can't game 24 hrs/day after all).

ATM I have no plans to upgrade, and my recruiting efforts have failed, so I don't expect to be in the Summer contest.

I just wanted to pre-defend myself from what could appear to be a shady deal.

It's on it's way.

But you do understand if the folks that are started on them finish, there are no more entries to the contest from doing a spotlight.
