In the Power User article in the August 2007 issue of Maximum PC, it says that to dual-boot XP and Vista, XP must be installed first. However, I have seen various tutorial on the web that explain how to install XP on a computer with Vista preinstalled, and then dual-boot with these two OSes. Here are links to a couple of these tutorials:
http://www.syschat.com/dual-boot-vista-xp-vista-already-1946.html
and
http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/about88231.html
Can someone explain the discrepancy here?
Thanks a lot,

It is easier to have XP installed first. A general rule when setting up a multi-boot scenario is to start with installing the oldest OS first, and then going on up to the newest.
I am sure the article that says you can install XP with Vista already is valid, but it is FAR easier I am sure to do things with XP install first. |

Ok, I understand. I just wanted to buy the computer preinstalled with Vista, and then install XP, because I can buy XP at my workplace for a very low price. If I bought the PC with XP on it, Vista would cost much more because I can't buy it at work and would have to pay $200 or so from an online retailer.

Just partition your hard drive. Install xp on unused partition. Run repair
from Vista install disk. |
