recently my computer needs to be restarted multiple times before it starts to work. mainly during boot up.
usually takes about 8 tries to get it to the desktop.
even if i do get to the desktop, if i attempt to watch a video/ play games etc computer would just freeze and need to be restarted once more.

i heard some people say it could be the cpu overheating but im not sure

anyone have any idea why this happens?

welcome to MPC forum!

overheating usually happens after a period of time, not initial start up.

may be a slightly loose card/memory/connector. when cold it has intermittent contact, as it warms up thermal expansion gives it a good connection.

bad or failing capacitors (in PSU or on mobo) can also give this effect.

how old is the system? did you build it?

Oh. yah haha thanks for the warm welcome

i believe the computer is about 5-6 years old, didnt build it myself but did swap out the power supply, add more ram, and a graphics card.*

check all cards, memory sticks and connectors are properly seated (IE pull and reinsert them).

while youre in there doing that, check the caps.. head over to Badcaps to see what to look for, your rig is about the right timeframe for when these bad caps made the rounds.

specs:
Processor Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz
Chipset Intel 915 G
Memory 2gb (DDR SDRAM)
Operating System Xp sp3

@Charbroiled: i took out ram, card plugs, power plugs and reinserted them. seems like there wasent any change. i also went in to check for signs of badcaps but didnt find any.
