Maximum PC

well, im a linux noob.
i find the installation procedures cryptic at best.

i downloaded the driver from ati....
is there a fast and easy way to install this driver?

the weird part is that when i installed ubuntu i clicked to install drivers on the menu and it did find a driver from ati, but its dated 2007.previewing screensavers makes the system unresponsive forcing a hard reboot.

my videocard is a 4870.

I realize it's for 8.10, but the way it reads, I can't imagine a whole lot of significant change going to 9.04

actually i kept omitting one command. oops

but i have other problems..
i cant get java for yahoo games to work at all
you see the problem is there doesn't seem to be a super user for ubuntu 9.04
ive encountered several instructions but with out super user privileges i cant really complete the install of java..

so i figured ok lemme try the 32 bit ubuntu.. install fails with all sorts of errors (i dunno maybe cause i have 4 gigs of ram) for this distro and linux mint 32 bit. (error -16 for ata6 ring a bell?)

i thought there's gotta be a different browser (than mozilla firefox) that has java... no.
konqeror, opera, flock... chrome isnt on linux yet-but i have hopes they will solve this annoyance.

any distros that have java working out of the box?
perhaps this is too complicated... i like a challenge lol, but im no genius.

You're forced to use sudo by default. I believe you can just change the root password though and use su if you want.

i decided to go to the mozilla website, then dl'd 3.5 (currently i had 3.011). with 3.5 i got the plugins and dropped them into the plugins folder. perhaps java was working but flash didn't.

really linux needs standards and to be easy to install. well its free at least. it wont let me use my native resolution but oh well.

Linux does have standards. Unfortunately, Ubuntu changes all sorts of little stuff around with every release. Java is easy to install FWIW. Did you try looking at the manual tarball install instructions on Sun's website? With the latest version of Ubuntu (9.04), it was just a matter of poking around in Add-remove.

I have an HD4870 myself and didn't have a problem with getting drivers working. ATI's instructions and GUI installer worked ok for me.

Are you still having trouble getting your native resolution? Use google to find a guide on editing your /etc/xorg/xorg.conf file.
