Anybody have any luck getting Virtual Pool 2 to work under Wine? I was able to install it, but the game won't launch. I get an error about 256 colors etc. I tried a few of the work arounds posted on the wiki, but they didn't seem to work quite right.

Anybody have any ideas?

Virtual Pool 2? Didn't that come out in 1856? :P

What is your current desktop resolution? If the game is old enough, it might not be able to handle more than 256 colours? :? I'm not sure, tbh. Can you give us the exact error message / log?

I'd love to. I may ask my dad to get some screenshots. It is for his wifes computer. (They play on a couples pool league and the VP should help her with angles etc).

I wasn't able to get it to run under XP even in compatibility mode. I think there is a newer version of it out that should work without the hassle, but we were trying to save some coin.

I don't think their is an equivalent F/OSS game. foobilard isn't quite there. The biggest thing is VP is supposed to show the angles and actually HELP with your game not not just let you play.

If there is another game / product out there, we can look at that.

The best I can do on the error is that it "needs 256 colors or 16bbm (bbp?)"

The resolution is somewhere around 1280x1024. I tried using Zephyr and Xnest, etc but I got the same errors.

btw, VP2 came out in 1997 :)

Have you seen this one?? http://www.nongnu.org/billiards/

My only thought with wine is to run winecfg and just set your virtual desktop to be 640X480.

Do you think it's possible to ditch wine altogether and just run it in Dosbox?

It isn't a dos game... but it might work?

Dosbox supports VP1...

I was going to get a Virtual PC image set up with Win 98 for my Dad to use. It should work.

You're right, it isn't, but I seem to recall a number of games back also worked in DOS.
