So I'm trying my first extensive case mod ever, as a for-fun and experience project. Since I don't really know what I'm doing, I decided that I wouldn't mess up my main computer, and so am using my second computer, which my brother is using as his gaming rig under license from me.
The case is an old sorry-ass compaq 5000 chassis- I got this computer from a friend, and have since replaced its 750Mhz Duron with 768MB RAM with a 2.4Ghz P4, 1GB DDR266, Radeon HD 3650. So its no modern powerpack, and the case is probably the crappiest part in it as well- so of course, its a great starting point to try to improve it. What I plan to do with this case is:
1. Paint it black
2. Add a side window with cold cathode lighting
3. make a pair of holes in the bottom and mount a pair of spare 80mm fans I have in it to cool the GPU.
4. fix the broken front-panel USB.
not too terribly ambitious... so anyways, the pics of my progress so far- I'll put them in the next post, since long posts get marked as spam by the forum.

Here's its sorry-ass self before any changes:

So far I've painted the rear metal parts- but I don't have any of that expensive black spray paint that will stick to the plastic front panel, so I've only painted the rear section- its drying on my deck as I type this.

I'll post more pics once it dries.

that's a great idea, definitely- I'm totally open for suggestions as to other things I can do with it.

Even if you make a looong ass post and take forever to do it, push preview before submitting. No problems then.

I see. Anyways, I finished the paint job, and moved the HDD to a position that will allow the turbine up front.

My AWESOME (nasty) HDD mounting system. It needs a little work, at least to look better. Yes, that is a plastic block jammed in there to hold the far side down.

that case was the 1st one I modded. I put a DIY plexy side window in and just added blue CCL and the rear 92mm fan. never occurred to me to mod the front for a turbine style intake but that would rock.

that bottom HD, check to make sure nothing shorts on the underside.. maybe raise it up a couple mm so air can get under it. should be fine but ya never know.

will the HDs power molex connector fit? looks close.

yeah it fits, you just kinda have to jam it in there- as for raising it, that's a good idea, I'd never thought of that danger- I'll probably just stick little rubber pads on the bottom of it. as for lights, I'm going red inside since my mobo is red, and sticking blue LED's inside that translucent blue front panel, which will look awesome.

there has to be an easier way to do that.

I moved it on purpose, I just didn't erase the old one because I put the new mark where i would be cutting it from, the outside. I'm not THAT bad. :D

Spartacus if you dont want to paint the front bezel, I would think about using some film from mnpctech.com, using that on the bezel and the front of the drive bays would really do your mod some justice.

yeah, I was thinking of just cleaning it up and painting it a more brilliant white- the contrast would look cool, but might make it look a bit too busy with the LED's and all- we'll see. at the moment I'm working on the more central features of the mod- after I'm done with that, I can go crazy.

I haven't been able to continue with the mod for a while, as I've been quite busy lately. But I did install the fan, and since I'm only going to be working with the side and front panels, I put the computer's guts back in.

as you can see, the machine currently has no PSU. My brother was gaming on it on a bright, clear, sunny day, and BOOM! the power flickers and the computer won't turn on. :( I swap in my PSU and it boots fine. new SeaSonic PSU is in the mail.

Looking sweet dude! Are you going to put a big fan in the front to make that "turbine" type thing?
