I am thinking of running Ubuntu Linux on the same hard drive my Windows XP is on. When I partitioned my hard drive for XP I made sure I didn't take the whole hard drive space. I set aside 40 to 50 GB of free disk space just for linux. I was wondering if Linux will see the unpartitioned disk space. Thank You.

During the install process, Linux will give you the option to use entire disk. Make sure you don't click on that! Otherwise you should be good to go.
