I've had it. Seriously.

Last night, I lost two workstations to a virus. A LINUX virus. WTF? I thought these didn't exist.

I got up this morning and noticed a distinct lack of noise in my server closet. Both systems shut down. Neither would reboot so I had to use LiveCDs to get them up ... only to find the drives corrupted, my data gone, and all my work hose.

I'm fucking sick of this shit. If these were MS boxes, I'd have some support .. as it is, I can't even find a data recovery specialist who can rebuild an EXT4 FS. My boss is screaming at me, I've 2 deadlines this week for which I have rewrite my articles from scratch, and all because I belived the hype.

I'm done. I'll be reloading Win2K onto all my boxes and throwing my Gentoo discs out the fucking window.

If I'm lucky, I'll find a damn penguin to strangle. I'm done with this open source shit. Real programmers get paid for their work .. I shoulda known better.

Sorry to hear of your troubles, Jip. Just think: if enough people hear about/have your troubles, they'll really make them think twice about open source.

My honest to goodness personal opinion is that F/OSS has its place as does proprietary solutions. I really don't know that F/OSS always makes for a better and safer server or development environment.

Yeah, I used to share your opinion until I realised what a complete lack of support can do to you.

Now I'm just pissed off. You get what you pay for, right?

"Me hoping this is...."

If not, well I could see one bad virus going through and infecting a whole lot of Linux computers and turning an entire community away. I mean one of the most appealing benefits to Linux is the lack of issues with Virii right?
Well next to the cost savings..
I suppose those that run Linux without anti-virus could be looking for trouble.
I don't know...

Jip is making me think too hard.

Alright, I admit it .. it was a lame attempt at an April Fool's joke.

You guys are too sharp for me. I still love my Gentoo.

It was painfully obvious when you said you were going to reinstall win 2K.

even more so when you went into data recovery and your boss screaming at you. I was hoping you said your name was Keir Thomas

Maybe it was the fact he said "WTF?" that gave it away...

Son of a bitch!
I saw that. I thought to myself, "Is 2k still supported??" but then I gave Jip the benefit of the doubt with his superior knowledge compared to my own. So I got suckered in but good.
Nice work.

My fuckin' heart actually dropped! I was scared for a minute while reading this!

First I thought about my buddy Jip and all his data.

Then I thought about some sick *nix virus that could infect my Linux box (also happens to be my main computer),

Then I thought about how we'd be losing Linux users to such a thing because you prove a very good point. As a home user, you don't have any real support.

Then I thought, "Wait.... A smart guy like Jip running a home server... what's the first and most important part of a server? Security. The second most important part? Backups for when your security gets borked." Jip knows better than to be running without backups.

Good april fools joke.

That's when you wittingly reply, "It's a good thing you created backups!"

I'd do that.. but I have literally hundreds of gigabytes of data to backup.. about half a terabyte. Most of it would be just a matter of re-downloading it or re-ripping it, so not to worry. I don't think I really have anything that would kill me to lose. I've shared all my bootlegs with other people at some point, but I got most of them on a hard copy to begin with, or I still have in my e-mail or something.

It'd be a huge PITA, but that's it.
