What can be done to thrust the website (and hence it's forums) around the web a bit better? Just seems I see everyone and their dog linked to on my jaunts around the web; except MPC.

I've asked Newegg to include us in their links section over a year ago. I got a reply that "they'd consider it", yet we're still vacant. The egg also did a $500 PCworld frontpager after MPC's been doing these for years now.

INQ lists a bunch of sites in their HW roundups, and some of those sites are nobodies, or in Chinese. This isn't MPC's problem really, but what would it take to get mentioned more there? INQ isn't the most enticing bedmate, but lots of folks around the world get their RSS feeds.

There's also websites that do nothing but list other sites that many folks frequent, and again we're pretty much void on them. Norem's still out there here and there, Murph's great with the readers and would be great recruits (if you can use them. Mainly mean chuming up with Norem) to go out and do some social networking to get on these sites. I guess ya could use current editors, but you guys are busy enough right?

Just wondering if we can spread the website and it's content a little better, or if any of us can help.

I've been fiddling with FireFox's Personas and have a couple up for Mozilla's review. The first one is simple...

But the other ones get better. Hey, I just spent 5 minutes on a whim to get MPC on people's browser...worth a shot, right? Get some of your photochop guru's on a cool one to upload please!

Hey Chumly. :D

Just to toss my $0.02 in, but I think Maximum PC is doing the best job it can with content promotion on the Web -- a fine mix of "promoting the good stuff when they have it" versus some of the other hardware sites that spam every story they have to Slashdot and Digg.

But I digress. I think that getting listed on the larger sites a la Newegg is something that would require a directive from someone actually based at MPC. Not saying you aren't, per se -- but I venture that's a discussion that Will or Norm might need to have with said site. Or sites. As for getting listed on sites like the Inquirer, well, I'm guessing that the response is going to be something like this: Maximum PC would rather devote its time to hardware testing and features than trying to chum up to some of the larger Web portals. Good content makes for good distribution, whereas you can spend all day trying to get average content linked all around the Web with no real gains to show.

I'm just shooting the breeze right now, however. There are quite a few different schools of thought on the matter when it comes to Web promotion, and I'm sure MPC is doing all it can to make sure that its content is distributed as far across the Web as humanly/Normly possible.

As for recruiting people to help. Well. It's a tricky proposition. I write for Maximum PC dot com; I'm not the site's social marketer. While I do what I can to promote stories when possible, I've found more success in drumming up ideas for better content than trying to hock what I write into every Web spittoon I can find. I could write stories for Digg all day long, but I don't always find that to be very compelling journalism, nor can one really "write" for Digg under an absence of the social media tools necessary to get promoted. Just an example.

Anyway, your points are both interesting and valid. But last I checked, MPC site traffic has been doing quite well compared previous months/years. Something must be working right. :D

Nice Persona Chumly! Please post again when it's live, and I'll install it :)

We're doing very well on traffic right now. We're about 4x bigger than we were last June right now, and we're growing at a good clip.

One thing that you guys can definitely do to help us is to promote our stories to social media sites, such as Stumbleupon and Reddit; and mash the Digg button when you see it on an article. If you have a personal blog, linking to stories you like is great too.

Beyond that, just keep reading the site and telling your friends about us.

I know I know, won't happen........ BUT,

You may want to put the Digg mod on the forum enhancement wish list. It adds a little icon/link deal to Digg at the bottom of each thread. Same goes for SU and Reddit. We could mash those buttons like crazy in the forum and the articles section. 8)

Holy mother of pearl. I get ya'll. Blue moon? ;)

I'm not doubting the traffic you get at the website. How you do that as-is, is way beyond me. People that love the rag follow the site and forums. That must explain it really, because MPC is the only rag to read.

I just made an observation that crap-hole sites are pimped all over and didn't notice us (sorry, using the proverbial "us" here) anywhere. You guys are strong in not selling out, and didn't want that as my intent or context. The website is strong, has great content, and Joe Blow out there that doesn't know about us is reading [what I think of as] horrible sites. Won't Name names of those horrible sites, but really...I count 3 in the top tier sites, and MPC is in there.

I found Boot much like most friends find MPC now days. Someone left me the mag, and I said "wow...this is true grit!" and I'm in it for the term. I leave my mags at work or at people's houses, and their IQ jumps 23.444 points per issue found.

Can I leave the website droppings around the web? I can't. Ummm...When I said "Chumly" in the industry, I became a "leak". There were more than a handful that muttered cursewords when they saw that sticker on my locker. I don't want on Wikipedia. I can't even play a fair game of TF2 anywhere I choose. I've got my own NDA's, per say. But you can bet your shiny green silicon there's some pseudonyms out there pointing toward MPC.com.
------------------------------------------
The persona is simple, and isn't text friendly I'm betting. They don't really give you any guidelines before you post it. I didn't even know what the px count was until it was wrong. I'd like a preview of it in use, and if you know how...I can tweak them all. I've got about 8 betas ready for trial runs.

[Edit: turned "Context" into "Content"]

Chumly is on to something. I really wish I hadn't given my issues to schools to make collages with after I found MPC mags on Google Books. From now on though, I'm just going to ninja my issues onto other people's desks to reduce my simple questions asked per second rate :D

A simple box knife and taking it to the sections that aren't MPC content leaves you with a lot of material I use for packing parts.

5th of May was great beating ads formed into a semi-donkey forms with a bat. Looked more like a cat with a long neck. I like cats ;) (sorry, tried to dodge the ad word)

You aren't accounting for direct bookmarks, which is how most people get here after they find it with Google in the first place.

That is just what people type into Google, not necessarily what they click on.

Google Trends isn't the best tool to use to analyze traffic.

Ya know, personally I think the FAH section of these forums lends a big hand in getting traffic to the site as well. We're always growing, getting new members. Granted, not all of them will hit the main page, but it's certainly not to be discounted that it's an influence.

Especially when we do Digg articles for certain upcoming events.

No doubt. It is the biggest section by far.

Quantcast actively tracks us, so it's more reliable than Alexa (which uses that stupid toolbar) and Google Trends, which just is a measure of how many people type "Maximum PC" into google, then click on a link.
