I run an ubuntu winXP dual-boot on my machine, though I only boot into WinXP to play games because I don't want to deal with WINE. When I updated to 9.04 though (which by the way is faster, shinier, better-supported, and all-around way better than the already excellent 8.10) I decided I would try getting the xfire chat client running, so I could keep in touch while I worked and all. well, I installed wine, xfire installed fine when using the XP API, Vista gave me errors, but after googling it, that's just a bug, not anything I'm doing. but anyways, after installing it I type into the command line the normal stuff:

wine "/home/spartacus/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Xfire/Xfire.exe"

and then it seems to be starting fine, and gives me this:

what gives? I seem to be doing it wrong, because other people have gotten it working... any ideas?

If it's Xfire you want, maybe Gfiremight work. I don't have Xfire, and I'm in Windows at the moment, so no clue if it does work, but googlecan help.

Looks more like an issue with OpenGL, although it's hard to tell if wine is the problem or OpenGL

Did you start new with 9.04 or just simply update what you had before and does glxinfo tell you anything telling? You might want to filter that command with "| grep direct" and | "grep OpenGL" The first will tell if if direct rendering is working and then other will tell you about OpenGL.

I did a fresh install of 9.04, because my old disk drive was broken and crashed when I tried to update to the beta from alternate install disk, which broke some packages, so I decided to start fresh.
also, I'm assuming that Gfire is not compatible with xfire's servers, which is the point- the people I would want to chat with use xfire.
and yes, I tried using the google, couldn't find anything that wasn't a guide that tells you to do exactly what I did.
I'll try that OpenGL filtering and post results back.

Do you have compiz or beryl enabled?

Gfire only requires a touch of tweaking now and then...

Question: I cant connect, the server tells my that my xfire version is out of date
Answer : Xfire changes versions very fast and you always have to use the latest version.
Go in the account settings of you xfire account in gaim/pidgin and open the advanced configuration.
Up the version to the actual xfire version. When xfire is at version 1.89 this means you have to set your version to 89
