What would you recommend that a computer science major get a minor in? A Business Minor or a Math Minor and why?

Well, in Computer Science you should definitely be taking a TON of math classes (which is why I avoided that major).

A business minor would help, but in the context of your major, I think you would be better off with a math minor.

Talk to your advisor and make sure you aren't in line for a math minor by the time you graduate. I know Missouri State for example, you get a math minor when you graduate with Computer Science.

I'll be done with Math this semester if I don't go for a minor in it. If I choose to I'll have to take 3 more Math Classes(11 credit hours)...if I choose business it'll be around 15 credit hours...I'm just kind of wondering what looks best to an employer when getting hired and when it comes to being promoted. Say two employees are on equal ground and there only difference is a Math Minor and Business Minor, what one would the boss man usually choose?

Business is almost as useful a field of study as naval gazing.

To be honest, I don't see either having much of an affect with the employers for hiring (the HR types just look for "college degree, check. Next requirement on the checklist"). You don't see "Which minor did they have on their degree" on the checklist... The main use would be of use to you for personal growth/background.

In terms of which is better, it really depends on where you see yourself going in the future.

1) There's no requirement to do a minor (I didn't bother).
2) If you see yourself working in a corporate environment, I think business looks better than math (unless you are in accounting/finance).
3) If you see yourself working in a research environment, going for a post graduate degree, math may help.

I'm in a corporate environment, I don't find much use out of the math I got for my BS in CS. I can't see more math doing anything different for me. I see business as being a possible help if I go for more management type positions.

Math minor will probably be quite a bit easier. You won't need to take as many courses to get the minor, plus, it'll be stuff that you'll enjoy. I'm EE and to get a math minor, I only need to take 1 extra math course. Go and talk to the academic advisor of your department and the academic advisors of the math/business departments. See what they have to say about it. Also, you can always go back to school at some point and get an MBA (probably have it paid for by your employer too) if you feel the need to.

Is the minor really that important? I thought the major is what you're getting the job with?

I mean, if 2 guys in a BS in CS, but one had a minor in Automotive Technology and another had one in International Business, and both are going for the position of Network Engineer, would it really make a difference?

In this economy, you bet. Even not in this economy. If they both had the same major, and similar amounts of experience, it would. I'd take the guy with the business minor. He's going to be more useful than a guy with a background in automotive tech.

But what if their position has nothing to do with their minor? A Network Engineer won't have anything to do with business issues. His job is to make sure the network stays up and running. Perhaps I'm missing something?

My take is that they see someone with a business minor as possible future management material.
