 Post subject: FAT32-> NTFS conversion

Just a quick ques. If I change my FAT32 D: volume to NTFS using the cmd prompt, am I going to lose everything on that drive? I have 2 partitions on 1 physical 60gb drive, and for some reason when I inst XP, I didn't set D: to NTFS, so will doing it know nark my data? Thanks in advance for any answers!

Yes you can convert a FAT32 drive to NTFS without losing data (assuming nothing goes wrong).

When you install Windows2000, it actually formats the drive as FAT32, and then converts it to NTFS.


It works great, no data loss...

Backup your data ANYWAY.

Make backing up before major changes a standard procedure.

"SHOULD be fine" does not equal "WILL be fine"

always good advice.

this also pplies if you're going to use Partition Magic or something similar.

I have a related question... what's the minimum free disk space needed prior to converting a partition?

1. Start by taking the size of the volume, in bytes, and dividing by 100. If this value is less than 1,048,576, use 1,048,576. If it is larger than 4,194,304, use 4,194,304.

2. Add to the above the size of the volume in bytes divided by 803.

3. Add to the above the number of files and directories on the volume multiplied by 1280.

4. Add to the above 196,096.
