That reminds me of an expensive lesson I learned in Iraq trying to cool my Dell laptop. Did the same thing you're doing. It was 135°F in the room I was in and the laptop kept overheating every time I'd try to rip a CD or DVD. So I used the fan. First, my hard drive went out. Replaced that, then my Ram and mobo burned up. Turns out the vibration from the fan unlocked the ram and when it slid out while the laptop was on, it fried the ram and ram socket on the mobo.

Yeah, it works wonders. The thing is that the fan's structure must be durable. If you sit a laptop on a flimsy box fan, the laptop's weight might bear down into the fan's grills, causing slower fan speed and questionable circulation.

For my cooler, I would put the box fan behind the lid of my notebook. If I put the lid at a certain angle, the air can draw down the lid and go beneath. I was able to keep my notebook about 15 to 25 degrees cooler after that.
