How about using Folding@home for a benchmark? Pick a monster WU and time it to see how fast the latest and greatest can burn through it.

I would love to see how much of difference there would be say between a AMD 64FX and a Intel Extreme/Prescott Pentium 4.

I would say because it's hard to get the same WU to really compare it.

I figured that they could work something out with Stanford. It might not be worth points, but a "dry run" where they just would just load and run.

Ask [Ch]ams about it, but he was saying something about Athlon XP procs blowing the doors off FAH WUs, depending on how the system is set up. It may be that FAH as a benchmark isn't very accurate.

Hmmm...I didn't know that! I need to bring that up with chams and build an AthlonXP system just to fold. Wonder if it works with the newer 64's too...

Hmmm. Well, thats why I asked. I have been wondering about what CPU can really crush a WU.

The only thing I could figure that would make a AMD outpace a Pentium is Hyperthreading. Just for kicks, I turned the HT off on my 2.4 (OC's to 2.9) to see if it would fold faster. Since with HT on, it only uses about 55-60% of the CPU (according to the task manager) so I figured that with HT off, then F@h would then get the full 100% of the CPU.

It didn't make any diference.

But hey, It doesn't hurt to ask, right?

doesnt F@H just stress the cpu? so basically it would only be a CPU benchmark...

I suspect the better FP operation of the Athlon is going to help at F@H or Seti. I have seen Seti used as a bench. They make it possible to work on the same WU's - I bet you could do the same with FAH WU's. Still, it will favor procs with better floating point performance in a bench.

Bubba could elaborate I am sure.

He sure could, but it wouldn't be necessary. I know lots and lots about processors, he just usually posts before I can ;)

What I don't know a lot about is how FAH works.

First we need to see if the editors are interested in doing a FAH benchmark. Then, we can get a sample unit... we'd need two actually, a gromac and a tinker.

We'd also have to publish the core type, sicne there are all sorts of cores running around. That reminds me, everyone should delete their core files and let Console d/l new core files.

Well, I don't use it. But - can you download a number of WU's to work on? Seti allows for this with a plugin. Then you just have to find the WU's you downloaded and make sure both machines are working on the same ones.

Still, all you are testing is a restricted set of CPU functions. Since Athlons have better FP performance they will likely kick the Intel's of the same class.

Just my guess
