hi all i have a maxtor 250gigs 8megs cache hdd, and windows saw it as 239gigs. i split the partitions into two. my C = 30gigs, and my D = 209gigs.

i know after all the computing the computer does, the spacing is less. for example, if you throw in a 60gig hdd, after partitioning it will come to only like 57gigs. is the 11gig drop in my 250gigs hdd normal? thanks for any replies.

thanks someguy, yeah i know its normal when it comes to not usin the full capacity of the hdd. but i didnt think its gonna be 239gigs after the partition was created. i thought it would be like 245gigs or something. thanks for the info.

250 * .93 = 232.5 GB

The larger the drive, the more space you "lose."

1 gigabyte doesnt = 1000 megabytes like hard drive makers thing...

thanks someguy. yeah when you posted the link to the calculations i went ahead and got a calculator and calculated the math. it comes out to the same thing you posted right now.

According to Hard Drive Manufacturers, 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes.

According to the rest of the computing world, 1GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes.

as you can see, that's 70 megabytes per gigabyte that is lost to Marketing.


On your 250GB drive, you lose a whopping 17GB of space.

go figure.
