I run Folding@home (the SMP client mainly). Right now I just have it up on my secondary box, an Athlon X2 4800+ and it's slow.

I'm putting the finishing touches on a 3.6GHz Q6600 box and also a 3.2GHz Q6600 machine (the new secondary box).

I'm wonder what sort of point production I can expect with these. I remember the days when my 4800+ would bring in about 1000ppd, now it's about half that. I suppose they've rebenched the WUs or something or other.

The faster of the two will run the Windows SMP client and the other the Linux SMP client. I'd just like an estimate as to what I can produce with them. Hopefully a decent chunk because my PPD has really sagged since I went back to the Athlon. Oh well...those GPUs will be up soon.

Thanks,

-Nater

with the current work units, running stock, my q6600 is getting a work unit done in just less than 24 hours, about 2000ppd. however if you are using capable video cards in these machines (8xxx) and up video cards, or newer radon cards, you can fold the gpu client. depending on the card, they will get twice or three times the points as the smp client, and with the quads, you can rum smp at the same time.

linux machines do different work units, and make more points than windows machines

I'm going to pair my nVidia cards I'm buying with some older dual core AMD CPUs and let my quads run SMP.

I've got an Opteron 165 and 170 sitting around and the nVidia client doesn't need a lot of CPU. I've got all the hardware sans a hard drive and two copies of Windows. I'm just waiting to get my new switch before I start them up.

Nice work dude...sounds like you have an awesome setup coming on line. My Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz produces about 3200~ ppd running Ubuntu 8.04...this is with the non-2665 wu's which are plaguing your X2 box at the moment. (with those it hits about 2600ppd, however it doesn't get as many of those as my windows boxes do for some reason.)

I can't remember what I was getting with xp... maybe 2/3rd - 3/4 of the ppd I get with linux sounds about right.

(I also have two 8800gt's getting close to 5kppd each on an sli mobo)

Cheers! (it's almost the weekend - w00t!)

-Tom

Yeah, those 2665 WUs are horrible. It's all I've been getting lately.

Welcome nater! Yes there are a boatload of 2665's around. Make sure you are entered in the Summer Sizzle contest-see the thread if you're not--and you can win some great folding hardware prizes as well as a big slug of points. One of the easiest contests with the best prizes anywhere.

And a note-the GPU2 client will use one core of a CPU. So going with SMP on the Quads is good if you can run those other slower procs with the GPU client. The fastest GPU cards combined with SMP on the other 3 cores can exceed 9000 ppd on Quads if you're curious.

I'm getting ready this weekend to run an controlled study of various high end NVidia cards to see optimum ppd/watt of electricity used. My guess is on the G92 core 8800 GTS but we will soon see. I will post results shortly.

The setup will be this when it's finished:

Q6600 @ 3.6GHz Windows SMP client (my gaming box)

Q6600 @ 3.4GHz Linux SMP (Kubuntu 8.04.1 x86-64)

Opteron 165 @ 2.0GHz with 8800GT (clocks not decided)

Opteron 170 @ 2.2GHz with 8800GT

Eventually I'd like to stuff the 8800GTs in one system and get a pair of 9800GTX+ cards for the second AMD box. I've also got an E6700 sitting around and I'd need a power supply and a hard drive to get that one running Linux SMP. I'm thinking that with the AMD/nVidia boxes I'll assign one core to the GPU client and then run either a console or WCG on the other core.

All I'm really waiting on is my Procurve 1800-24G and Linksys WRT600N (to be used as an access point).

running 2 instances of SMP in Kubuntu will get you ~3500PPD with that 3.4ghz quad

Looks to me like Nater folds for the Horde and is over 1 million points.

That wasn't very clear in the post.

Congratulations Nater

Yeah, I've been Folding for a couple years now. I recently shut down for awhile to move, so I'm just now back up and running with the PS3 and my Athlon X2 box. I still don't have my main Q6600 rig set up, but that should be within the next couple weeks along with an 8800GT running the client as well.

I have 3 Q6600s@3.2. I had to RMA some RAM so I'm down to two at the moment. They get 3500-6000ppd depending on the WUs. Make sure you use the -advmethods flag on the linux PCs. I think it helps pick up the A2 WUs. I'm running GPU clients on Kubuntu 64 8.0.4 so the SMP client PPD is lower then it should be. I'm going to try Xubuntu and see if that helps the GPU clients.

thats running in vm ware linux 8.04 64bit it really kills off the gpu production but for that kind of result, cant complain.

is there a reason to respond to such an old thread???? which hasn't had a post since sept of 08...
