Signatures are disabled.
There's no plan to turn them on in the future, as per MaxPC staff.

I concur - it was a nightmare to admin on the old Delphi forum when there were sigs and HTML.

I think signatures should be allowed, except with the following paramaters which seem to work well on other messageboards I've been to:

  • no signature privelages until 100 posts or more (like avatars)
  • no HTML
  • maximum width of 600 pixels (as to not break the tables) and height of 300 pixels (sigs not taking up an entire page)
  • images not totalling over 50KB in size

Faliure to follow signature protocols and not repair on advisory of an admin/moderator would result in loss of signature priveleges.

Ug, and I'll add to that:
If you feel the need to post your specs, please note, anyhting over three lines is spam!

I believe the issue at hand is that currently the list cannot be restriced for sigs. Its an all or nothing deal.

Fact of the matter is that the MaxPC staff said no.

We'd rather the mods spend their time doing something useful, like promoting good discussions and helping keep things on topic than waste hundreds of hours policing people who want to push the limits on sigs.

I think sigs should be text only allowing only for your system specs, afterall, this is a computer forum & it would help tremendously if people would have to add that info when they join.

I used to admin a rose forum that used Ikonboard, there are tons of hacks for IB, which could be adjusted for this forum. I'm not up on phpBB, but doing a google, I see hacks for it also.

There are a lot of knowldegable people here, who I'm sure can hack this board out so that sigs contain only computer info, which as I said, is much needed here. please?

Pretty decent suggestion. Not sure that I'd want to repeatedly see computer specs in nearly every thread/post, but it I wouldn't mind having the option to place them in profile, a la Delphi.

Same.
It IMO unnecessarily bloats a thread - I mean, is it really applicable in say the LL? Or how much info for that matter? Ugh - Pandora's Box...

The part I also don't like about specs in a sig is that while it's good to feel proud of your computer, there's people it's going to intimidate. They won't participate because they see people running latest & greatest.

I'd prefer it thereif it were to be, but I always remember people having to state to look in the profile for specs. And then people would have to remember to update them... For all of it, might as well just provide what's necessary if/when there's issues IMO.

There has to be some kind of hack to make everyone happy. Just like when we post now, there is an option that says- Attach signature (signatures can be changed in profile). This should be unchecked as default, but when posting and needing info about the puter in the siggy, could easily be checked.

Our user page here is pretty small. At the rose forum we had all sorts of things that could be put there, real name, zone, interests as well as a photo, kind of like Delphi, but better.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

A lot of people will use their sig lines to include some graphic that will take forever and a day for my dialup to download. (around here, it's dialup or nothing)

Allow space in the profile for system specs, but don't make it mandatory as a lot of newbies just don't know. There are people out there who WANT to explore the world of hardware, but they get the shakes just thinking about taking the cover off thanks to movies that have psycho computers in them.

Restrict the sigs to text only, and it should be doable.
