Just got done installing my system into my Cosmos and initial temp readings are roughly the same as my Thermaltake Armor Jr.

I wanted to test how loud the case fans are by themselves, so I unplugged my Zalman 9700 from the mobo, turned on the PC, and was quite pleased. With AC not running in my apartment, the computer was at most a whisper. All 4 case fans were running at 100%

Spazz was right about the gap behind the front door. I can't use my cheap-o Vantec fan controller with control knobs. Because of this, and because the Zalman 9700 only has a 3 pin mobo connector, I cannot control the speed in the BIOS. I am thinking about replacing my HSF with one of same quality but with 4 pin connector.

Other than that and the very minor annoyance of the cable management holes already mentioned, I personally am glad to have purchased the Cosmos and I'm sorry your experience with it was poor Spazz. Wolf, at least try using the case before giving up on it. You might be surprised by the result.

I'm hope my caterwauling didn't cause you any anxiety! And I am very grateful for your post. I'm spinning around like a turnstile on the New York Subway. Take some pictures! Bet it's a looker!

I am happy to hear of your positive experience!

However, your post tells me nothing. To get a meaningful comparision, I do have some questions though...
  1. What is the air (ambient) temperature in your computer room?
  2. What are your components and their specs?
  3. Are you overclocking as I am?
  4. What are your temps after leaving the system idling for around 30 minutes (CPU, GPU and HDD)?

As far as I know, you may actually like your HDDs running at 60C.

The cable management holes were not a "minor annoyance" for me since I ran several cables through it before I discovered the problem. I am glad to have given you a heads up before hand.

Thanks.

Here are the answers to some of your questions:

1. The ambient temp in my room is 72F.

2. mobo: EVGA 680i
cpu: C2D E6600
RAM: OCZ Platinum PC2-800
GPU: nVidia 8800GTS 640MB
PSU: OCZ GameXStream 600watts

3. The CPU is overclocked to 3.2GHz on a 1600MHz FSB. I had to drop the multiplier to 8X to achieve this. The vCore is set at 1.40 volts. The GPU is currently not overclocked.

4. My temps are the following based on nTune:
CPU: 38C
GPU: 65C
System: 34C

I'm not exactly sure how to measure the temp of the hard drive. How were you able to do it Spazz?

SpeedFan can give you the temps on the hard drives.

Thanks a lot. I'll try it during my lunch break. My computer will have been on for a few hours then. I'll let you know what the HD is then.

I just installed SpeedFan but I cannot find where it says the hard drive temp. I thought it was under the S.M.A.R.T. tab but nothing shows up. I don't think my hard drive is supported. Any other suggestions?

On the main "Readings" panel, in the list of temps on the right side of the window. The hard drive temps are listed as "HD0: 35" "HD1: 32" etc.

RECEIVER HAS REFUSED THE DELIVERY OF THE PACKAGE. (DOMESTIC RETURNED TO SENDER, INTERNATIONAL - SENDER IS CONTACTED) / RETURNED TO SHIPPER[X

I just had too many reservations. I was already aware of the cable management issue via the Cooler Master forum Cosmos thread.

I want good looks, VERY high performance AND quiet operation, no restrictions on components used internally or in the bays, removable motherboard trays are the schiznit, and the ability to get an additional windowed side panel wouldn't hurt either. I have been very impressed with my Lian Li PC86USB. The only reasons I am getting a replacement are it's 80MM fans, it's lack of firewire and e-sata ports in the front I/O panel, and the fact the drive cage prohibits the install of long Ass video cards.

Wolf, I am sorry if I rained on your parade.

My disappointment over the cable management stems from the photo of the interior of the MPC 2007 Dream Machine on Page 27 of the September issue: If you look closely, you can see that, with the exception of the PCIe cables, all of the other power supply cables were routed out the back through the hole below the motherboard. So, I naturally assumed that I would be able to do this with my Cosmos. Wrong. The cable routing in MPC’s Dream Machine, as photographed, would prevent the closure of the case’s side door. So, what you see there is only something jury-rigged for the magazine’s photo session; not something that reflects the reality of the finished project.

I never had a desire for removable motherboard trays. They just add more screws I have to mess with. :P

You didn't rain on my parade, you handed me an umbrella. I had wanted a Cosmos BEFORE I knew the Mag had chosen it. I didn't notice that photo as I have been scanning the web for reviews with detailed reviews for a while.

Gonna go look right now though!!!
This is my top choice at the moment:

I'm super-busy trying to get the next issue out, so I didn't read the whole thread. If I missed something important here, I apologize.

The DM2007 wiring job was a pretty substantial undertaking. We don't (usually) do any smoke-and-mirrors bullshit in the mag, simply because we don't do you any favors by doing that. I did some creative cable coiling and taping to keep everything flat, so that the opposite side of the case would close. The sound insulation on the case we have is fairly compressible, and even the big power supply cables would mash down enough that the door would close (admittedly, it required a little more force than I'd like to close, but it did close properly for the photo shoot.

If I was going to use that case, I'd probably Dremel a notch in the vertical support, just so there's a little more room for the really big power cable. That would make closing that side much easier.

Thanks for the clarification Will! Could you shed any light on the HDD temps?

Those temps are nowhere to be seen. I am using the latest SpeedFan.

Pssst.....

The same temp readings (as in Temp 1, HD1, HD0, etc) won't be on all computers. It all depends on how the motherboard is configured and other stuff like that :D

Mine is now back on its way to Ontario Ca. I've been toying with the idea of buying a Dremel, learning how to use it, and removing the offending parts to facilitate the panel closing, as well as drilling a bunch of holes in those HDD holders.

Of course I'd have to get another Cosmos...
