I am going to build a new system, preferably AMD, what is the best of them all, i'v heard Prescott, but it gets hot, and Northwood so far (AMD CHIPS WOULD ALSO BE ACCEPTED)

Strictly speaking of overclocking:

Intel = 2.4C to 2.8C
AMD = Mobile XPs

In addition, the New 90nm chips from AMD. The 3000+, 3200+ and 3500+.

I think the mobile XP's have greater gains, with 1.8 chips reaching 2.7 on AIR :shock:

still if u want a large oc u would get an athlon xp mobile. but- if you are looking for the best clock for clock oc performance, definitely (note that it is spelled correctly) an A64 chip. I see little differences when i overclocked my 2.8Ghz prescott to 3.24

the new AMD's overclock very nicely. i'd say the best overclock bang for the buck is a 3500+ witht he winchester core. its 300 bucks and starts at 2.2 ghz but overclocks can go up to 2.6 purely on air. that kind of overclock would compete with an FX for about a third of the price. THAT is what makes it the best overclocking cpu IMO

If you want the best bang for your buck and some amazing OC fun, stick with AMD. Your best bet right now would be the DFI LANParty UT nF3-250Gb ...
Here's a link to a review of this amazing board:

http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2198

... and Athlon 64 3400+ 2.2 GHz 1024KB Socket 754.

Don't forget that Good Memory plays a very important part in your OC efforts.

I just ordered my DFI board and 3200+ (cash was limited) and can't wait to start playing with it. I've heard some pretty amazing results so far from this pair. I'll post some results when I get them in.

Good Luck! :D

Sounds very solid, but i'v decided to go with 3500+ so a 939 socket, beautiful !

I am probably going to get flamed for this... but I hate AMDs... they run so hot... and do not have a shut down protection.... if you watch the DVD that came with Upgrading and reparing pcs 13th edition (i think) you can see what happens when AMD gets too hot... it doesnt even shut itself off....

Although, AMD is easier to overclock...

I guess I am just a pentium guy... :roll:

did you get that dvd from the guy on tv that also teaches you how to use word perfect? no need to post un-edumacateddd posts in a thread that was finished.

PS-if AMD is easy to overclock they obviously dont run so hot that they melt :wink:

exactly... I knew that was coming. I only say that becuase I had horrible luck with OC'ing AMDs, so I don't do it. PIII celerons OC like nobody's business.

And if my reply was so pointless, why reply to it? Only opening the door for me to make another "pointless" reply?

I just said I prefered to OC Intel chips over AMD... but Intel doesnt like people screwing with their cpus.. AMD doesn't give 2 hoots....

I assume you are referring to Video Professor that always gives all these 'teaching' cds away. no, I did not get that DVD from him... if you read my post... I said it came with Upgrading and Repairing PCs 13th edition.

And, another note, just saying that AMD is easy to OC, doesnt mean that it doesnt run hot. Every AMD I have seen, runs hotter than a Pentium of the same mhz (ghz).....

Like I said, I guess I am just an Intel guy who is apparently more educated than most give credit for.

Sorry, these just stood out to me...

Fact: AMD does give a damn about overclocking. In fact, they give so much "damn" that they've tried everything until they laser locked every chip, like Intel does. They don't warrant overclocking like everyone else (which is obvious).

True, but because they have two different architechtures. Not because one is inferior to the other.

Well, I should have been more specific. I didnt mean to imply that AMD supports it, becuase no manufacture in their right mind would condon anything that puts that much stress on a chip. They would be losing money just on warrenties for toasted chips.

There was a time when AMD didn't care (or seem to) becuase they did not goto such lengths till semi-recently.

I don't really follow AMD... I was not too fond of them. I had lots of bad experiences with the K6 procs... and they were not even OC'd.

I don't recall saying one or the other was inferior to the other. I actually think it is cool that AMD can run 'as' well as an Intel with fewer ghz. Which is cool, but they still run hotter (I really wish people would not take that as me saying they are poorer chips... I dont necessarily think that they are... I just dont like them as much becuase of previous experience. It is TOTALLY possible that I could have one at a later date and be very happy with it.)
