 Post subject: windows xp home, 2 versions?

I am building my first computer and want to use windows xp home. I was at best buy and they had an upgrade version for $99 but the full version is $199. In maximum pc magazine in all the price lists for their pcs they build it says $90 or $95. Can I use the upgradeversion on a new hard drive?

You can do a clean install with the Upgrade version. You just need to have a CD of a previous version of Windows handy (Win98 or Win95 will work).

you just need an install disk from another microsoft OS (98, 2000, ME, etc). from what i hear, the recovery disks that come with OEM (dell, HP, etc) which contain the OS dont work

If all you have is a system restore disk (OEM) I also have heard that those will not work. However, you can give it a try.

Here is what I have done to perform a clean install of XP. First and foremost be sure the bios is set to boot from the CD ROM drive! Very important to do that before all else.

Next insert the XP Upgrade in your CD ROM drive and reboot the machine. The computer should find and see the XP disk. From there follow the directions. When prompted, I would let XP format the drive in NFTS. Also, depending on drive size you could partition the drive leaving a small (maybe 5 GB partition) for the OS. During the process a Windows XP Upgrade will look for proof of ownership of a qualifing product. This is where you would place the disk you have in the CD ROM. Should Windows XP not see or care for the disk you have, you could insert any Windows 98, ME or 2000 disk and away you go.

I am not saying the last part is 100% legit but it will work. That becomes your call if your existing disk fails to work.

I am sure that maximum pc is referring to oem versions of xp home. you can get it at newegg at or below stated price. At that price, I would not mess with the upgrade version.

Err, it doesn't upgrade '95. Only 98/ME.

The home upgrade can be used on a clean hard drive, you just have to verify that you have a copy of a full version MS os (win98se,ME,2000). To save yourself even a few more bucks. Borrow a friends copy of the old os or just burn yourself a copy!

It doesn't have to be the Full version (Win98,ME) it can be the Upgrade version. You also can't Upgrade from Win2000 to Home, but you can to Pro. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/ ... atrix.mspx
