 Post subject: Update Your Windows XP CD article - New Windows too big

Hi there,
I was working through the steps in the article, and everything was going great. However, when I went to burn the new CD, it wouldn't fit on one CD. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

It worked using an 80 minute CD. I don't think we had any of the old 72 minute jobbers around.

It should also work on a DVD, I think. I didn't test that though.

Well, my total files came out to be around 875MB, too much for my CD. I thought about trying it out on a DVD, but haven't yet. I wondered if maybe it's because I need so many updates added. My Window XP CD is one of the originals without SP1. Could the difference in versions account for the increased size? Thanks for you help.

That happens when SP1 and SP2 don't get properly integrated... You have 3 copies (and 3 versions) of some of the files floating on the CD...

You must be doing something wrong.

Make sure you slipstream SP2, that will get all updates up to that point in the disc. You won't need to manually add them on top of that.

Look in the Support directory of the CD. Likely you'll have two directories. One is Tools and I can't remember what the other one was. I just kept Tools and removed the other directory altogether since I didn't really need anything from it. Between the OEM and Retail versions, there is some differences in what is in the Support directories. Remove what's taking up the most room out of the Support directory and you'll be able to bring the size back down to roughly 650MB. :D

Brings up an interesting point though, about Bootable DVD's. I;ve made plenty of bootable CD's, is making a bootable DVD pretty much the same?

i dont have a DVD burner so i cant say for sure...BUT i think if you set the sector count(using roxio not sure about nero)to 4 just like you do a CD it should work
