Maximum PC

Hey all.

I went to download SP2 RC2 from www.microsoft.com

the first thing it told me was that it had new update software, so I downloaded that without a hitch.

Upon reboot, I got the message that windows had some updates available. I clicked on it, and it came up with SP2 RC2.

I started downloading SP2 RC2 (it said 100mb) at about this time yesterday. I have a DSL 756kbps connection, so I didn't think it would take too long.

I came back to my computer last night at about 6:00 PM, about 6 hours later. It said, "downloading updates: 3%" I was like, WTF?.

So I tried killing it. I went into the task manager and found that by killing the process: wuauclt.exe I could kill it. Then I realized that there were two of them. So I killed the second one. Not more than 5 seconds later did they pop up agian!

This time they actually started downloading though. It's gotten to 32% now.

I have restarted my computer numerous times. I have killed this process numerous times. It keeps on coming back.

I ran AVG and did a full scan. Nothing showed up, no viruses.

I'm clueless. What the hell is going on at Microsoft?

I don't think Windows Update would try installing an RC release. That's weird. If you want to install it just download it yourself and install it that way.

Too late for that, this thing is downloading and won't stop!

Damn thing restarts no matter what I do. Now at 33%

Turn off automatic updates and see if it's still a problem.

And yea...it took me quite a bit to find it when I wanted to install it. You're better off using google to search rather than the search on MS' site..

you can download the network pack one...its just an exacutable file

That's probably why it's 150% larger than the othe one I was downloading.

Well, I've got SP2 RC2 up and running great.

Thing is, I don't really know what's new about it. Yeah, I've seen the security panel, and threre's a button on my start menu that says "set program access and defaults" that I don't remember being there, but what all took up that much space?

All the patches between SP1 and the upcoming SP2 are included in that, as well as a new firewall (check that out, it's a HUGE improvement) and various other security features. Lot's of "behind the scenes" stuff that only software developers really need to know about (mostly concerning security).

The "Set Program Access And Defaults" thingy came a while ago, it just gives you the option not to use built-in MS software. Obviously enough, they were pretty much forced to include that but it's pretty useful.
