I'm running an AMD Athlon 3200+ (barton core) with 512 ram and whenever I turn on the assembly optimizations all of my WU's finish early. Not the normal kind of early either, five in a row that all finish inside five minutes. When I turn them off, it doesn't seem to have a problem finishing the core. No overclocking. I would like to fix this problem because I figure I must be losing some massive ppd without them. I've been working on the same gromacs for over five days now, and the last one took three days to finish. I haven't been folding long, but I figure this must be unusually long for a nice machine. (I know it's not amazing, but it's not "slow" by any means)

I have speedfan to monitor the cpu temp, not overheating, max at 55 with the stock hs/fan.


If you are not running the -forceasm flag:
Start > Run > Regedit > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Services > FAH@(insert path here) > Right click on "ImagePath" > Click on "Modify" > add flag(s) after "-advmethods"

about folding, does internet connection matter?

Also do harddrive speed have an impact as well and how much % of cpu usage does folding take up?

no and no

only the unused cycles unless the computer is doing nothing then it will use 100% or whatever you set it to.

Open task manager, you'll see FAH5.xx-Console.exe (if using the console)
You'll also see FahCore_xx.exe, where xx is a number such as _7a, _65, _78, _79, _82.

When running 1 instance of folding, you should see 1 core running in task manager. If you are running 2 instances, you will see 2 cores.

Each different type of work unit will need a different core to fold it. You'll wind up with several cores, but ONLY the one's you need will ever be working. You'll NEVER see two cores folding on the same protein or WU for instance.

FoldinGL will display three-dimensional, animated and rotating protein, which is the result of your current Folding@home calculation.

Starting from version 1.20, this program is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License.

F@H Client.cfg Explained

If you use the Service/Console setup of F@H, then this is an example of what it should "GENERALLY" look like and explanations for each part. I will use double stars ** to denote a description of each line... I am taking this info from my client.cfg, so realize this doesn't cover every concievable option, but i believe is pretty darn close. The [http] section is left incomplete, as I haven't been able to find definitions for any of those entries.

Settings
username=Whatever_Username_You_Choose - obvious, the name that shows up when you turn in work

team=11108 - the team you fold for, in this case, MaximumPC is Team 11108**

asknet=no - should the machine ask for permission before uploading complete work? Really only useful in a dial-up situation, or if you have certain times of the day you are allowed net access

machineid=1 - this is very useful when folding more than one instance on a PC, example: Dual Proc or Dual Core systems, or Hyperthreaded systems. Machineid can be 1-8, which means you can have up to 8 instances at once on a single machine, provided you have the CPU's and RAM to do it.

local=548 - this shows how many WU's this machine (or instance if more than one instance on a machine) has completed to date. It's a good way to keep track on how much work (not how many points, but how many WU's) that one instance of F@H has done. This also shows up in the FAHLog.txt when you have the (without quotes)"-verbosity 9" flag turned on. In this case, my machine has done 548 wu's since this instance of F@H was installed (had quite a few EUE's while attempting to OC this thing and get it folding stable, but it never happened to be stable to fold at ANY OC)

bigpackets=yes - allows downloading of WU's greater than 5mb in size. These usually have bonus points and are worth the most, but can take up huge chunks of RAM, especially the QMD's.

type=1 - 1 = Normal. 2 = Machine is too slow to finish normal WU's, so if you give it a 2 as client-type, it will only ask for and fold Timeless WU's. If you are running console version 5.04, then a type=3 is the same as putting in the -advmethods flag

nonet=yes - when combined with type=2, this will cause the client to download 10 deadlineless WUs. The client will regularly (6 hours) attempt to connect to the net after the completion of 7 to upload completed WUs and download 7 new ones.

[core]
priority=0 - 0=idle priority, it folds when nothing else is using the CPU. 1=Low Priority. I do not recommended priority=1 unless it is a dedicated folding box that is used for NOTHING else but folding.

cpuusage=100 - how much of the CPU's power it will use when folding. This WILL scale back as the user demands more and more of the CPU

disableassembly=no - Setting this to yes would disable assembly optimizations (SSE, SSE2, 3DNow) and slow all WUs using cores other than Tinker and Amber to a crawl. Only disable optimizations on a machine that is unstable when using SIMD optimizations.

checkpoint=30 - frequency of intermediate checkpoints. A checkpoint is written at the completion of every frame plus intermediately at checkpoint=xx (30 being max). It doesn't hurt production much on most WU's, but it doesn't make much sense to have the checkpoint set to anything other than 30 on rigs running 24/7 unless power failures or system hangs occur frequently. It makes no sense if you're folding QMDs to set checkpoints to 15 if it takes 15'10" to complete a frame. The two checkpoints will be 10 seconds apart then 15 minutes. Tinkers don't use intermediate checkpoints.

ignoredeadlines=no - set this to yes if you're in the process of overclocking your machine. Set to no, if the clock resets to bios day one, ususlly several years in the past, you'll lose every WU you submit that was downloaded with the wrong date.

[power]
battery=no - useful only for laptops. When it detects that the lappy is running in battery-mode only, then F@H will shut down if this option is turned to yes

Sample Client.cfg - here is a sample client.cfg to see what it looks like WITHOUT the definitons. Remember, this is a sample for this post, and these settings may not work for everyone.

How to make Folding work on Vista

In order to Fold on Vista using the console version, you would need to perform the following steps.

1. Make a folder in C:\Users\%username%
2. Download FAH504-Console.exe into the new folder
3. Right click on the installer and click Properties
4. Select Compatibility
5. Check the box that says Run this program in compatibly mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
6. Next select the box that says Run this program as an administrator
7. Click Apply and then ok and then launch the executable and set up like normal

In order to get Folding in a C:\Program Files\folding directory, you would need to turn off User Account Control or log in as the Administrator, which is not required in order to get Folding running.

Heyo - I'm a new folding member trying to get this set up. First got the GUI version but switched to console so I could run it as a service. I've read the FAQs (most of them) did a search, can't figure some stuff out - sorry for the newbie questions.

1. When setting up console, it asked "Use proxy?". I said "no", as it was the default. What does this mean?

2. I'm a gamer/performance user. I have 1 gig of good RAM and a AMD 64X2 4200+. Should I accept the large work loads? Will these impact performance in any significant way? Oblivion chugs enough as it is:(

Welcome to the Forums Aerothorn.

1. Proxy is if you are connecting to the internet through a Proxy server, if you don't have one, no need to worry and setting that option to 'no' is fine.

2. Accepting 'Large Work Units' is for systems that typically have 2 + GB of RAM, with just 1 GB of RAM the WU's will complete much slower and give you less Points Per Day (PPD). It won't effect your system while you are using it as long as you set the other option to 'Idle' as opposed to 'Low'.

3. No clue, sorry.

4. forceasm forces the client (console in your case) to use SSE extensions for your CPU. Your AMD X2 64 4200+ CPU can take advantage of it, I would recommend using it. I have it set on all my AMD 64 CPU's.

Ok, I just noticed that unlike the GUI version, the console version runs where you download it - so it's running in my Downloads folder when I want it running in the F@H folder.

If I drag the various files over there, will it start working from there? Or do I have to edit the registry to the new location?

Also, my computer is right next to my bed, and I'm a very light sleeper, and it has a bright blue light, so I tend to turn it off at night. Can I still contribute to F@H? Will this cause bad interruptions in projects? What happens if you stop in the middle of a frame?

Maybe I should have stuck to the GUI version...generally I'm quite good with computers but this is confusing the hell out of me.
