Do they not sell these anymore? I think mine decided to flake out last night while the wife was trying to listen to music and I kind of liked the slot load aspect of it.

I haven't seen a slot-loading DVD-ROM since I bought mine ... over a year ago. :?

I imagine they still exist, though ... however I checked my 2 fav local stores (online) and neither sells any.

Ah well. I just prefer slot since those trays are bound to get broken when my son becomes mobile.

Yep, they sure do! I saw them at CompUSA the other day when I was there. They have the Slot Load Pioneer DVD-Roms. I was shocked actually that they did have them.

Just checked CompUSA's site and they don't have them on there, but they do have them in the store here in Lewisville, Texas.

:-)

EBay might probably be the best resource without getting raped on prices. A quick glance only brought up three 16x DVD drives, but the bids weren't high yet:

I always preferred the tray simply because it would accommodate the smaller sized CDs, but you're definitely (note that it is spelled correctly) not alone in being a slot-load fan.

My daughter is 2 and she's been opening and closing my optical drives for close to a year and they are still hanging in there.

On the other hand, she's stuck so many dvd's, cd's, cell phones, toys, food in my VCR that it no longer plays anything :?

So i'd be careful with a slot, you might find many surprises in there :D

Pioneer made the really nice slot loaders for a long time. There are a few others but i really liked the pioneers.
