I think it would be beneficial to give members a place to voice their opinions concerning features that they would like to see in the forum (or features that they would like to see removed). For example, since the bbcode is parsed to html, I think it would be beneficial to create a thumbnail bbcode that when parsed resulted in the following in html....

Code:
[thumb]http://image.location.edu[/thumb]

when parsed becomes
    <a href=http://image.location.edu>
    <img src=http://image.location.edu width=100 height=100>
    </a>

This would encourage people to post thumbnails. While having to create a thumbnail manually is a pita, this is the kind of problem that bbcode/html solve rather easily! Also, we could extend the basic bbcode so that thumbnails can be arranged in a pattern like....

Code:
thumb1                 thumb2               thumb3
thumb4                 thumb5               thumb6

Images that are beyond a certain size (width, height, area) could automagically be thumbnailed preventing people from, as Chams says, 'breaking the tables'. I think the mods would find this to be a useful feature.

Other suggestions:
  • a spell checker
  • some form of content rating
  • the ability to post an applet (and the C# equivalent of an applet)

I forgot one. We should have a raw SQL query/search feature. Hey, it's a 4GL, right?

Code:
select member.name, member.password
from member
where member.name='chams';

hehe... :lol:

These are all excellent ideas. In another thread, though, Will mentioned that the team is looking to minimize the numbers of hacks, customisations and changes ... that way, when they upgrade / change the forum, there is less work to be done [1].

[1]: I'm not saying I agree ... just that this is probably the answer you'll get. :)

While I understand Will's thoughts. I think over time this will change and things that have high bang for buck will be utilized. Like resizeing images and putting a "notify" under the quote button action.

What it takes:

Climping the learning curve (which always takes time)
Time (which always takes time)
Getting ontop of the learning curve (which saves time)
Keeping detailed notes on add-ins (which saves time)
Resticting add-ins to that which gives high bang for buck.

I think the trick is to have a great forum that takes as little time and effort as possible to keep going.

Manta

Damn - it ate one of my posts in this thread!

Let's add proper locking/syncrhonization to the list, shall we?! :)

Regarding the bbcode enhancements like the thumbnail example I gave above, I don't believe this should be a problem in the future. I haven't checked, but I imagine the post are stored as html.

Anyways, we shall see......
