What OS do you run?
1. Gentoo - 2.6.15-r1/gcc-3.4.5
2. WindowsXP SP2 (occasionally)
3. BeOS 5 Pro

Why do you run it?
1. I thought I loved linux before....now I'm a complete idiot about it because of Gentoo. I can't say enough good things about it. As mentioned elsewhere, portage is da' bomb.
2. Eh, sometimes there are things I use in Winblows that are less than optimal when emulated in Linux. This list shortens every week.
3. Old times sake. I miss it....

When did you start using it?
1. 1998 or 1999?
2. 3.0/3.1 can't remember
3. Right before 5.0 came out.

GUI?
1. Fluxbox (convert from KDE) - I'm a desktop minimalist & commandline (ab)user, so it suits me perfectly.
2. Bleh, I use the old windows. New windows still looks like a cartoon to me, although I've installed WindowBlinds
3. Default.

Which browser?
1. Opera
2. Firefox
Spending time going between the two, although there are still a few pages that Opera doesn't display correctly for me.

Email Client?
1. Thunderbird (converted from Kmail)
2. Outlook Express
3. Don't do mail on BeOS actually...

Audio/Video?
1. XmmS, MPlayer, Ogle, whatever works
2. Winamp, PowerDvD or my Hollywood Plus card
3. I switch around a lot, can't even remember...

Editors, Office progs?
1. Vim, gedit, Open Office, KDE's Office
2. Productive and MS Office 2000, Wordpad
3. Productive (sweet!), vi

What OS do you run?
Windows XP SP2
Knoppix 3.9
Slax 2

Why do you run it?
Windows for general purposes that require it.
Knoppix/Slax are both awesome responsive and the KDE UI is so awesome!

When did you start using it?
Windows: since the days of 3.1
Knoppix/Slax/other live Linux CDs: yesterday

App Questions:
Firefox on both, Konqueror on linux.

Email client?
Thunderbird on windows, havent checked my mail using linux.
Audio and video players?
WMP 10 on win, haven't used any on linux.

Office progs (editors, etc.)?
Office 2003 student/teacher ed on win
Open Office.org 2.0 beta on both

Well, i'm not exactly a veteran *nix user, but so far I'm loving the feel of KDE. It's absolutely slaughters the Luna UI and makes OS X run for its money.

What OS do you run?
Gentoo Linux x86 2005.0 profile

Why do you run it?
Because linux has an open model, something I can't live without. Plus, I feel like I am a part of a community with linux. With windows, I'm a normal every day slacker. Plus, Games tend to be easier to install.

When did you start using it?

App Questions:
Which browser?
Mozilla Firefox

Email client?
I always just go to yahoo's site.

Audio and video players?
Beep Media Player

Office progs (editors, etc.)?
Abiword

What OS do you run?
1. Windows XP Home
2. Fedora Core 3

Why do you run it?
1. Mostly for gaming, partially for Microsoft Visual Studio
2. Learning to use Unix/Linux, and development (my website is hosted on a Linux system, it's easier to test my website before it goes live).

When did you start using it?
1. No idea. Looooong time ago
2. Started with Red Hat 6.2, and moved up on and off since then

Which browser?
Nothing but FireFox. It's one of the few pieces of software that's portable, stable, easy to use, simple, well supported, intuitive, etc. It's an example all software developers should follow. It pwns all.

Email client?
Gmail.com

Audio and video players?
Windows Media Player
XMMS

Office progs (editors, etc.)?
Don't use Office at all. My docs are all HTML, edited with Notepad++ or VIM. I would use VIM on windows as well, but it doesn't handle wrapping very well. I sometimes use Visio for things like flow charts or UML diagrams, and I also use Paint Shop Pro or Gimp for image editing.

Because I think it's the best of the *nix operating systems. It's extremely stable, has a great ports system, excellent documentation, and a cool mascott named Beastie 8).

When did you start using it?
Started using it for servers in 2002, and for workstation use in 2004.

5 is an upgrade, but I've been using FC for about a year.

General Questions:
What OS do you run?

Linux (Ubuntu, Debian, Slack)
Used to run Caldera, RedHat, Fedora, Gentoo, SuSE.

Why do you run it?

As a desktop. Preference. I only run Windows when someone is paying me to.

As a Webserver. I'm a cheap bastard and didn't want to have to spend out for an NT server when I started doing web hosting.

When did you start using it?

Played around with original builds of Linux while I was in the Army (1991-1994). Dropped it for a while because life was exceedingly busy.

Picked it up again with RedHat around 1997 and was damn impressed by package managed Linux. When I was younger, compiling everything from scratch was cool. But it got old as my time became more constrained. Part of the reason I stopped using Linux for a while.

App Questions:
Which browser?

Firefox by preference.

Email client?

Thunderbird by preference.

Audio and video players?

Pretty much anything so long as I can avoid Quicktime and Real and their annoying nagware.

Office progs (editors, etc.)?

OOo (Duh)
vi

GUI
GNOME

General Questions:
What OS do you run?

Suse Linux 10.1 for most games and everything else. Windows XP x64 for the games I cannot get running in Linux.

Why do you run it?

WGA and windows activation. I dont believe in licenses. I believe If I purchase software or music, I own it and can do whatever i want with it. Noone has the right to tell me what to do with what I have legalliy purchased.

When did you start using it?

10.0 on my server last year. 10.1 on my main box this summer. Finally, linux is good enough enough to almost completely go windows free. There are some serious games that are avail on linux.. including id software titles. I have converted my dad's pc to Suse 10.1 also. He likes it so much, he does not want to go back.

App Questions:
Which browser?
Firefox mostly. Been playing around with Opera 9 a bit... not too bad!

Email client?

Thunderbird. Been running this for about 3 years now.

Audio and video players?

Kaffiene, mplayer, beep player.

Office progs (editors, etc.)?

Openoffice.org 2.x. Been using for 3 years also. Note: I was running Firefox, thunderbird, and Openoffice in Windows.

What OS do you run? SuSE 10, right now freespire(long story)

Why do you run it? SuSE 10.0 is easy to use. I like yast, and it was my 1st. I upgraded to suse 10.1(reinstall), but my ethernet/wireless would not work.

When did you start using it? Ever since I started using linux!

App Questions:
Which browser? Firefox, Opera

Email client? Don't use any.(Gmail in browser works for me!)

Audio and video players? Amarok, do not play video.

Office progs (editors, etc.)? Openoffice 2.0

What OS do you run? I run Suse 10.3

Why do you run it? Suse 10.3 is easy to learn and is relatively easy to do stuff with and it doesn't have that crappy license crap that XP does.

When did you start using it? I started using Suse 10.1 about 6 months ago.

Which browser? Firefox FTW

Email client? Mozilla Thunderbird

Audio and video players? Kaffeine the most, but also VLC.

Office progs (editors, etc.)? Mostly I use OpenOffice.org and a few others that I can't remember
