Main Sys: Athlon XP 2800+
Folding rig: Athlon XP 2000+ (<$60)
or

Main Sys: Mpobile Athlon XP 2400+ ($90) or 2500+ ($93)
Folding rig: Athlon XP 2800+

I already have the 2800+, but the 1800+ I was gonna use for my folding rig is dead, so I need a new CPU.

So should I get a cheapo 2000+ for my folding rig or do I buy a Mobile Athy XP for my main rig to overclock with. I have a good mobo for it, a Abit NF7 v2.

I vote for the one with more power

I would go for the "45 watt" mobile 2400+ over the "35 watt" mobile 2400+. I dont have much reason for this, it just seems more logical to me. ($10) :P

Edit: Forgive me for being a smart ass, but shouldnt this belong in Hardware Haven?

As if my vote isn't obvious as soon as I step into a thread, I say spend the little extra and go the OCing route. It's not terribly more expensive, it's satisfying, you have a mobo with a reputation built on OCing, and you'd end up with more power for BOTH rigs.

OC it.

Nope, because the whole point is to overclock my main system ;)

The M-AXPs I see at Newegg run at 266 fsb. Regular Bartons run at 333. Is there a performance hit due to the FSB? Or do M-AXPs hit 333 easy?

I would imagine that there would be a performance hit at running both at stocks speeds (Mobile vs non-mobile counterpart). People aren't snagging these up for stock speeds though, I've read some crazy overclocks on the Mobiles. You're starting off at a lower voltage AND with the multiplier unlocked, so it's as close to a guaranteed chip as you'll find on AMD's side of the fence.

Couple of good read:
Crazy Overclock
10/10
Decent Forum Read

and of course Overclockers CPU database so you can see what others have been getting:

So what did you end up doing??? Inquiring minds (namely me) want to know!

I ordered the mobile 2500+ and some PC3200 DDR memory for the NF7-Sv2

The downside is I have to wait til Thursday or Friday for it to arrive :(

Sweet choice! Can't wait to hear what you're able to do with it.

Definitely Mobile main. The least you can get is 2.4ghz. That in an XP is nothing to sneeze at. Depending on your cooling you can obtain 2600Mhz. Mine does 2.6 stable using H20.

Yeah, after I spent $700 for a BFG 6800GT, the proc AND a gig of DDR 400? I like my balls right where they are, thankyouverymuch. In the Mason Jar under my wife's nightstand.

Here is something you may not know.

Folding is based on gigahertz, not rated speeds!

I found this out when my 2400+ 2.0ghz chip was folding just 10% under my 2500+ @ 2.2ghz (3200+).

So, here's the deal.

That 2800+ has a core clock speed of 2.08ghz. The 2400+ has a core clock speed of 2.0ghz. There will be very little differnce in folding times!

Now, what I suggest is just buying a 2400+, and oc'ing it up to say a 300-333mhz FSB. This will be especially easy if you buy the mobile version. Then you will be running at 2250-2490ghz. That will outfold most 3200+'s!
