Maximum PC

No I'm not made of wood but i have an idea about making a case mod out of wood.

I want to know what precautions should be taken, when placing the mobo on the wood.
should the wood be treated and what not.
Just curious.

well, the wood should be very well dried, so that no moisture remains in it, so it doesnt short out your pc, other than that i cant think of anything.

you want them on a metal case, I'm thinking Ya'll would want them on a wooden case, then any moisture concerns are basically moot.

that or fabricate wood sides for metal frame of an exsting ATX case? or use the removable tray from a ATX case?

Whao! I never gave that any thought before! That would be perfect for people who have their puters in a living space that prefer not to have them as visible as a common box. At least a much better idea than those sneak a puter dresser thingys.

what you have to watch is grounding, everything in a steel or aluminum is interconnected metal frames, metal screws,power supply etc. since i am a cabinetmaker ive been thinking about it for about 10 years, it will have to be a blend of both with the wood to hide it more than anything, for instance mounting cds drives etc very important the screws are not to long, plan twice, cut once. make duplicates of all parts so you can assemble for your friends when they whine that they want one to.

I've seen a couple of wooden cases online. The thing you have to be carefull of is expansion from heat.

All materials expand as they get hot, but wood does it more than most. The cycle of hot/cool can pull seams apart, make the paint flake, and even crack the wood.

Keep this in mind while building.

I'm researching wood right now. I laredy have the specs drawn up. You can get so much more creative with wood!

I've thought of making one out of wood and chicken wire and calling it "Bubba's Komputor". Outside it would look like, well, it would look like a chicken coop but the components would be top of the line. The contrast would be the point. The only real problem is dust but some compressed air and that's taken care of. The chicken wire would also provide a ground path for components and all the open space would prevent any heat problems. There's no reason not to use wood if you can provide, ventilation, ground path, access and looks. The wood would also act like an insulator for noise.

the only real potential harm with wood is heat damage to the wood and the finish catching on fire if placed in hot spots on the mobo.

A good idea is to lay out the pc first then put all the finishing by the way get some nice wood and just put some finish and make it shiny...shiny pretty.. lots of router work with fancy roman bits and ..... damn my ideas went off again.
