A computer engineer designs computer hardware. Think .. circuits, logic gates, power vs. heat, etc..

A software engineer designs .. well, software. The two terms are occasionally (incorrectly) confused.

actually. Computer Science & Engineering (my degree) covers both. Although, engineering is applied to both hardware and software (logic of both circuits and code etc) They are so closesly related in the computer field that they got put together for my degree (with specialization options of course)

A computer science degree with an emphasis in the computer engineering subjects for electives and a concentration would be best imo, OR, Electrical engineering with computer science/engineering electives.

I've discussed with cousins and fraternity members in other schools, and their engineering degrees were watered down. in addition to the basic computer science programming course ALL freshmen take, our comp eng students had to take only one, "modified" course in data structures and algorithms. It REALLY hurt them later in VHDL and Assembly. It's not necessary, as there were some that did fine, but in general, the CS students did better in the vhdl and asmbly courses.

VHDL required programming a xilinx fpga, the asembly course wasn't exactly an assembly course, but the projects were all using assembly on a motorola 68000 board and using the serial or parallel ports to interface with another board for a simple chat commm program, or using a speaker op-amp, mic to make a filter (and stuff like that).

With my old college, if you're capable, you can get into their "honors program" which lets you take free summer classes, and overload to do a graduate program, or another major within those 4 years. I took advantage of it for the CS masters. Other colleges should also have similar degrees and you should as them about if if this interests you. The extra courses were free.
