For some reason DNS keeps dropping out on my Win2003 server. It's only been the last month where if I leave it run for a while it drops out...I can't resolve names and I can't browse the network. I thought it was maybe due to the fact I had the server up and running for 61 days. Nope. I restarted the server and within twenty minutes the service dropped out again.

I only realized it was a DNS problem when I went to do an NSLOOKUP and it told me it couldn't find a DNS server. If I restart the DNS service, things are fine. I can still ping the server, and even connect directly to shares, but I just can't access the resources on the domain (they're not visible in network connections), nor will it resolve to my).

It's not a kerberos ticket issue, and the only way to fix it is restart the service or restart the server. It hasn't done it for a week, but it puzzles me...seems to be entirely random.

Where's Logik when you need him, damn it.

You're not using Power Saving are you?

During inactivity it may be powering down your NICs to save power and then not powering them back up when a client trys to access DNS.

When DNS dies can you ping the default gateway from the server?

That's a good point, but I have power saving disabled on all NIC's.
