When ever I bring up a picture to resize or look at it goes into the background drop down window or it becomes my desktop back ground. 1st How do I find them so I can delete them ? 2nd how do I stop them from going in there ?

Post step-by-step what you are doing which causes this result. Include the name of the program you are using.

If you open up windows explorer, navigate to My Computer\C:\windows
On the right hand window, all of the .bmp files listed are the ones on the desktop drop down list. Just move or delete the ones you don't want.

Are you by any chance right clicking on the desktop, selecting properties, which then brings you to a "Display Properties" window in which you see a list of image files... and when you click one that's when the background changes?

Can you possibly take a screen-shot and show us exactly where you see the "drop down" list you're describing?

Any .bmp in the windows folder or any .jpeg, .jpg, ,bmp, .gif, or .png in the my pictures folder will appear in that list if you are where I think you are. When you highlight a picture in that list and click ok at the bottom of the window it becomes your desktop. Move all the pics out of your my pictures folder if you don't want them in the list.

To see the file extensions I am talking about go to any folder and click on tools, folder options, and view. Uncheck the "hide extentions for known file types" box.

If this all seems greek to you you'd best not do anything like deleting pics or changing any settings. Get a book on WinXP and read up on the basics.
