msconfig isn't an editable file. It's a program you can run in 98, 98se, ME, and XP that allows you to edit various files and settings that control things such as the programs that startup when your computer boots. You can access it by clicking on the Start button, choosing the run command, and entering msconfig into the box that will appear and then clicking OK.

Ok, I was in a hurry and didn't give enough info....sorry...I know what msconfig is...I use it all the time to control startup proggies. But in the listings sometimes there are multiple listings of the same proggie, or a deleted proggie is still listed even if you have removed it and edited the Registry.
What I want to know is "what file contains the listing of those proggies"...

You'll need to play with your registry. As always, proceed with caution...

Look in the following entries:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Runonce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

For disabled entries:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SharedTools\MSConfig\startupfolder

It should be noted that not all of those keys may result in the offending entries you are wanting to remove.

Those files are contained in a couple places besides just the registry. MSConfig also affects the startup folder (a folder in your start menu that contains shortcuts), system.ini, win.ini (in the windows directory), boot.ini (root of your harddrive, ie c:\), various services (which are also accessable via the right-click / manage menu on your My Computer icon). This in under XP, earlier versions of windows will contain a smaller amount of these items (no boot.ini in 98, etc)
