whats the difference between the three plug hookups and the four plug hookups?

I want a cooler that can run off of the stock motherboard and CPU features
Asus P5AD2-E Premium
Intel P4/ 3.4GHz 800M LGA 775/2M or 650 series

Does the fourth wire enable motherboard control?

I notice the some 3 wire setups have their own fan controls but really do not want to deal with it if I can get it automatic. I know that this chip is supposed to ramp up power when needed to run cooler and was hoping the chip or motherboard will do the same for the fans.

Three plug hookups connect to your motherboard and four plug go to your power supply. If you don't connect the fan controller, it's automatic, you don't HAVE to connect the fan controllers with some fans.
