building a pc for a friend, all he wants is internet connectivity and the abilty to play ultima online, and play around with bryce and poser.

heres what i got so far:

ABIT "IS7-E2" i865PE Chipset Motherboard for Intel Socket 478 CPU ( or this one, ABIT "BE7II" i845PE Chipset Motherboard for Intel Socket 478 CPU)
Intel Celeron 2.0 GHz 400MHz FSB, 128K Cache
Corsair Value Select 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-2700
POWERCOLOR ATI RADEON 9600PRO Video Card, 256MB DDR, 128-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "R96-D3G"
Lite-On 52X32X52 Internal EIDE CD-RW Drive Black, Model SOHR-5238S Black
RAIDMAX Black 10-bay Case with 420W Power Supply, Model "ATX-822WBP"

so, the question is, which mobo is better?

I'm not sure about the motherboard, but I'm sure of one thing:
Get rid of that graphics card.

Powercolor is the worst manufacturuer of graphics cards. Try trusted brands with great customer support such as eVGA, BFG, ASUS, and MSI.

That system seems fine if he all he will be doing is web surfing.
Dont worry about the graphics card, its fine.
You prolly could save a bit more money and getting a lower tier one if hes not gonna be playing games at all.
Nice of you that you are building one for a friend.

Go with the i865 chipset, a little more up to date than the 845 and slightly more flexible.

That video card should be okay, but I haven't heard much of anything about Powercolor. Maybe do a little more research to make sure they are reputable and not some fly-by-night.

ATI = the devil (not really, but I am an Nvida guy)
Powercooler = satan's lacky

get an Nvida FX 5XXX is my reccomendation

You will be quite please with that Celeron they perform much better than the original ones, but if you can get a 2.2 or 2.4 I would recommend it.

I wasn't criticizing the chip, I was criticizing the manufaturer.

Get a Celeron D with LGA 775 socket, so you can use the 925XE chipset.
